hi
could someone please inform me how to increase canvas size, i have done it, but after putting a black border around my picture, i want to increase canvas size, but it appears inside the black border, and cant work out how to get it outside.

hey boon what program are you using? what method did you use to put a border around your photo?
 
In photoshop, goto Image> canvas size (Alt+Ctrl+C)

In the New size fields, add to the dimensions already entered (add the same amount for a balanced finish).

Select the centre square if you want to add the canvas to all sides (all arrows should be pointing outward).

i am using CS2, and i put the border around using the selection tool followed by stroke and amount/colour, fairly easy stuff, but after adding a border i wanted to increase the white space outside the black border, but could only get it inside the border, which pushes the border away from the picture.

When you go to image>canvas size make sure you place a tick in the box that says "relative" have the center box on the anchor grid selected with all the arrows pointing out and then adjust the amount to your required increase. It will then extend the canvas using the colour selected as either your foreground or background colour (depending on what you have selected for that box) by an increased amount relative to your original canvas size. :)

thanks guys, but either i am missing something, or i am not explaining proporly.
quick guide, =
1. Picture, adjust, playwith or whatever
2. selection, stroke / 2pixels, black = border
3. adjust canvas, center box, arrows pointing outwards, colour white, 5 pixels click ok.
OUTCOME = the small black border put around in 2 is pushed out from the picture, the canvas does not join on the outside of it.
 
Boon ,what u need to do is select ' canvas size ' in the ' image ' drop down from the top bar,

then choose the size you want to increase it by , you have a choice of pixels, cm's ets etc, then in the boxes put in how many pixels etc you want to increase by, then there is the colour of the extra canvas you want, it can be standard black or white or grey , or you can choose from a colour chart,

you can add borders like this by doing a different colour for each canvas increase in size, or you can edit/stroke the image after to put a border inside the new canvas size after it has been made bigger,

eg, make canvas bigger by 100 pix, then stroke by 10 pix to give a black border outside a 90 pix white area,

or,

make canvas bigger by 90 pix/white, then make canvas bigger by 10 pix/black

same result

to try and show what i want, please go to the Cumbrian lake picture, please note: the inner black border has been added AFTER the extra canvas, because i cant do it any other way, or rather CS2 wont do it.
 
eay one this, mess about with the image as much as you like, then when your done:
make a layer copy of the background
change canvas size of the new layer(making sure its the background layer)to whatever you like, and colour as required
Select the top later, Edit>stroke>whatever you want
Flatten layers
Job done
 
when you go to extend the canvas, you are making sure the selection is de-selected, aren't you?

I don't have CS2 installed on the lappy so can't try it to see if this is the problem, so I'm just guessing really at the mo.
