Being driven mad trying to get email working on sons laptop!!! Tried the rubbish mail program, then opera and now firefox. It doesnt seem to like the username or password saying either is invalid (yet its fine on my macbook!

Incoming is map.mail.me.com - port 993 - SSL/TLS - Authentication is Normal password
Outgoing is smtp.mail.me.com - port 587 - STARTTLS - Authentication is Normal password

Username is his email address

Any ideas what is going wrong? Any recommendations on how I can get email working (other programs?)

Can you provide who is email provider is and the part of the email address after the @

Could you also explain what exactly is not working, can you send but not receive etc.

What errors messages do you get if any?

I have not got a clue what mail.me.com needs but
map.mail.me.com most likely should be
imap.mail.me.com

Don't worry too much about SMTP that is needed for when you send email concentrate on the other bit first. And BTW Thunderbird is an email client why do you use a browser (I know you can but ...).

IMAP! And another vote for Mozilla Thunderbird.

Thanks, sorry my typo it is imap on the laptop, damn autocorrect on here!

Its a me.com (Apple) account - going through the setup process it just keeps saying username or password invalid and when I go to the inbox and send/recieve its says the login to server failed. Am not using this in browser.

eyeMac stuff, I will stay out of it and let others to help :-(

Could it be caused by using a non-apple device?

Check you have not been sent any authorization emails from apple for this account.

Also check that under SMTP settings that server requires authorization is set to yes/ticked

Those issues are fine.

Right it may not just be you, I have just tried my own account and setting up a new one and both had their credentials rejected by Apple.

It is not really clear what your problem is. You don't say if sons's laptop is Mac or Windows or Linux and you do not specify "the rubbish mail program". You are also not really clear about what is "fine on my MacBook" - do you mean your sons email works fine on your MacBook in Apple Mail and in browsers? If so it looks like the problem is with your son's laptop and so important to know if it is Mac, Windows or Linux and what Mail program you are using.

Sons laptop is windows, the mail program was the free one that came with it (Microsoft?) but also having the problem with Opera and Thunderbird. On ipad and MacBook it all works fine.

My only recent experience with Windows is helping friends but I think MS doesn't supply an email program with Windows 10. If the sign in doesn't work with Tbird or in browsers that would seem to indicate a fault with Windows. FWIW I have often signed into my iCloud a/c on friends Windows machines (browsers and Tbird) and never had a problem so there is no inherent conflict between iCloud and Windows or Linux. Sorry that doesn't really help you, I hope some comes along with a better idea.

My past experience with apple mail on a windows computer has been using outlook, and the iCloud for windows download which auto-sets up the email for you once you've signed into your iTunes account. I've never succeeded in manually entering the IMAP settings in order to get it to work on a windows computer.

I'm on a Mac and I have loads of trouble setting up email account on Thunderbird. I get the same error message. In the end I use Mail to set up the iCloud account. Works fine . As does iPhone and iPad . My BT email account with T'Bird set up easily. I've not tried other email clients but as what I've got works I don't really need to many

This!

Apple want to keep you on an apple device so add extra hoops if you want to use something else
Rubbish. It's just an option, like 2FA, for greater security, you don't have to use either of them.
It's not in Apple's interests to make it difficult to use an iCloud account on Windows or wherever.

i don't know the solution to the OP problem but it's just not true that there are any particular difficulties using iCloud accounts on Windows or other accounts on Macs. Gmail can be quite snotty about older browsers etc but even there you can choose 'lower security", as they call it, in settings.

I've just remembered that I had exactly this problem on a Windows laptop and it eventually transpired that the letter L key was not working and I had an L in the password but problem was hidden by the asterisks! Solution - use an external keyboard.

Apart from that I assume you have checked caps lock is off and have rebooted the laptop.

Thanks, had seen that but when I login to icloud I cant see those options and clicking on the links in your link takes be to a page that simply says 403 forbidden - Shield

I've just tried this from my iCloud account and getting the same error message. Looks like the page is just down at the moment. Try again later.
I've set this up for my Android devices and it's pretty easy to do once the page is working.

This is definitely your problem. It's not optional and all of my Android devices stopped receiving Apple emails until I setup a new password for them.
