Can't find images

Im getting a bit confused with the new iMac as i was a windows user until now.So far i open my images in iPhoto and set the external editor to use photoshop, this works fine.I then proceed to edit images and the i go to save.When i go to save the default location is showing as a number e.g.. 20141222-194111.If i save to this location then i can't find my edited images, even doing a search in " Finder ". I can set it to save to my desktop and it saves fine but this leaves me having to move it back into iPhoto at some point. So how do i save images to show straight into iPhoto again? Thanks and Happy New Year.
 
Been a Mac user for several years now, but have always avoided using iPhoto [come to think of it, rarely use i-anything] prefering to keep everything in Lightroom and catalogued where I can find them again even if LR isn't actually open.

When you save from photoshop, I would suggest setting your own folders, in Pictures, or on an external drive, or where ever your preferred location is. I know as default it doesn't show such options in the little save box that opens, but there should be a drop down arrow on right hand side of box that opens them when you click and you can save in exactly the same way you would have done in Windows, either in an existing folder or by creating a new one some where.

As for finding the existing folders it seems to be using, I often find googling the problem finds the answer on one mac help forum or another. Will go have a quick look see what comes up.
 
Yv, thanks.I had googled and tried a few different places.Im using Yosemite on the Retina 5K.When i hit the save button it brings up my options, the default is the 20141222-194111 folder and i can see the edited files listed there but when you hit save again to bring up the image size/quality you want to save the folder then disappears.I tried finder using the folder name but it doesn't find it, i tried finder to find the image name and still doesn't find it but i know they are there somewhere..lol
 
OK, might need some screen shots. I am on Yosemite, but dont use iphoto so have nothing to compare it to. I can see there is an iPhotoLibrary icon in my Pictures folder, but in finder there is nothing inside it, obviously. OSX does tend to have a lot of folders set to hidden, which might be why you can't find them, but can't remember whether that affects search or not.

However, to confirm, on initial save, you can change the folder option if you wanted to, but what you can't do is find the folder it is saving to as default, yes?
 
It looks like all my folders in iPhoto are being renamed with the number option like 20141222-19.... and my searching can't pick up the folder number/name.Opening iPhoto finds all my original folder names and pictures but saved edits of these pictures go into the re-named/re-numbered folders which doing a search can't find.
 
Right, try following these instructions , this will show you where the files are. Once opened in Finder, make sure the view mode is showing in columns, so you can see the path back to the starting folder.

open iphoto
highlight a single photo
click 'File' menu, then chose 'reveal in finder', then 'original' or 'modified' to choice

I just opened iPhoto and added a couple of pictures and it does work, the folders are indeed numbers and the do trace back to that iPhoto in Pictures. However, how you get it to show it the other way, ie, starting with finder and navigating forward to the folder you want containing the actual photos there, I have no idea, because clicking that iPhoto in Pictures just opens the app. It is this kind of rubbish that is the reason I love my Mac but avoid using anything that starts with an 'i' ;)

Do you have Adobe Bridge too if you have photoshop? might be better using that for cataloguing than iPhoto, at least you will know where everything is.
 
I'd suggest treating the file system in the mac just like you would windows: take responsibility for where everything goes, create and name your own folders and never let the OS squirrel away files. Sure it will find them in its way, but it's not helpful to you as a user.

I always felt like iPhoto should be great, rather than the intensely frustrating and ineffective package it used to be when I had more of my life to waste on stupid stuff.

Yip, found that out-why oh why does it rename every file to its own numbering system is a mystery to me.
 
Have you discovered that for every file your Mac saves, it creates another file holding data about that file to go with it, but hides those files?

Because as with everything Apple, once they have you locked into there 'World', they want to keep you in their 'World'. ;) :LOL: And they don't make it easy to leave their 'World'.:rolleyes:
