I have only just bought the Fuji XF1 the other week and the reason I bought it was for it's 25mm f/1.8 at it's widest. I find it's great for most of my photos that I do, and they are indoor family shots. I did have my eye on the Canon SX280 HS before I bought the Fuji, but it was at the time a little more than I wanted to pay. Just noticed the Canon has now dropped in price, and it is now £129, I can't believe it, I am tempted. My excuse, it does have GPS and a superzoom, yes I know the image quality wont be as good as the Fuji, but I think it would be handy for holiday photos. If I did have the spare cash, I would be tempted to add the Canon to my little collection.

If you're looking for encouragement to buy you won't get it here. But if were you I'd buy it. What the hell. You deserve it to yourself to buy it. The GPS really is necessary. The price is reduced, perhaps for only 24 hrs. It would be so oooooo handy for your holiday photos.

Is that what you wanted??????:naughty:

That's what I love about this place, I knew somebody would come along and tell me I needed it ;)

that was your 666th message john, coincidence? :naughty:

If it is only £129 you could always try it out (if of course you can afford £129) and sell it on in a while if it doesn't live up to expectations. You can't make a massive loss because it hasn't cost a fortune in the first place :) If you prefer the Canon to the Fuji, sell the Fuji on instead :)

Yes I did notice that 666 post count, little creepy that so best get posting and get past that. No way I will get rid of the Fuji, I love it's quirky little ways so deffo keeping it. Just the Canon looks an interesting holiday camera, with that zoom and GPS for tagging locations seems good. I can see times when one will be better over the other, for different situations.

yeah after taking my XF1 back I was looking at the now bargain SX280 but I have ended up thinking about what I want from a little camera and the conclusion is holiday snaps and decent video as when at home I have all 3 Sigma Merrills annd Nikon DSLRs to choose from..

so I have ended up going for a Nikon AW110 waterproof action thingymibob, £137 from Amazon Warehouse.

so think about if you owned both cameras where would you use them differently? where would the Canon and Fuji be any different for your use?

If only there was a proper cure for GAS! As long as each camera fits a different niche, I can't see any problem with polycamerandry but only an idiot (or a chronic GAS sufferer) would have 2 of the same model...

Marginally more seriously, if you can genuinely afford it and it won't cause any problems (and I don't mean by hiding it so she doesn't find out about it!) with the other half, why not? At a guess she has a few items in her wardrobe/drawers that you've never seen her wear and possibly don't know about so a £130 or so camera shouldn't make waves.

The little Fuji is brilliant as I love it's bright wide angle for indoor situations, such as when I am getting all the family in the shots. It's also great for getting more in the scene out and about, such as in the park and street scenes. It has a lovely picture quality, and I love the manual zoom on it, and I now even like the pull and twist turn on function. Yes I know it has it's limitations, but for the money it's a little cracker:

The Canon SX280 looks like an interesting camera with it's 20X zoom and GPS, I know this camera would not be great for indoor stuff, as the lens is not that bright/fast/wide whatever the term. Not unless I used the dreaded pop up flash. But I would use this on holidays when I want just that little more reach, some places I just could not get close enough to, various reasons, cut off by water, fence or wall. Or simply could not be bothered to walk to get closer, as it was far to hot. Plus it's handy to look at the GPS locations, as this helps when you are trying to find where the photos where taken.
So for a little over a hundred quid, it looks like an interesting little camera.

Something to look into further (Canon SX280 Battery Issues ) Just been looking on Youtube and other places, trying to find out a little more about the Canon. It seems a lot of people are having problems when they try and record video. It seems the camera sees a fully charged battery as a depleted one, when they switch to video mode from photo mode! I have always like the Canon Powershots, but I am going to read up a little more, before I make a purchase.

Well to tell you the truth, NO I don't need another Camera that would fit in the same Category ( compact ) But there again, I don't need to get up and out of bed, as I am retired! I don't smoke, I drink only very very occasionally, I don't have any other hobbies. Me and the missus keep on top of our bills and pay them all on time, then we save what is left over.

Money we have left over goes to children and grandchildren, any money over goes into a pot then we treat ourselves. The missus may buy another pair of shoes, she already has loads. Or she may buy another bloomin top, she has them packed in cupboard in boxes, all over the place. But yet she will go out and buy more, but that's just what she does. I have no interest in clothing, so long as I have another clean pair of kecks ( Trousers not sure if that's just a Northern term ) to change into and another clean t shirt and undies, then I am happy.

So you see Nod, it's either another Camera when saved up enough dosh in the pot, or another pair of shoes, top etc the missus may get herself. We do both treat ourselves from time to time, and while it may not be necessary purchases we make, we have decided at our time of life, we say to hell with it and enjoy our twilight years.

Oh and Nod, I was out this morning trying some silky water effects with the little Fuji, and yes you are right it is a little difficult with the baby Fuji :)

Depending on the speed of the stream, the 30" can be enough but not for really creamy water.

Maybe see what you can save out of your "pocket money"? If you have a budget for Werther's (sorry but you did say you're a retired grandfather!) or the like, be mean with them and save a few quid a week if possible.

Of course that does mean investing in a robust pair of dentures lol ;)

I was reading all that when I was interested in one, looks like firmware update fixed it by what I read? also take into consideration the countless 1000s of users not having an issue..

that aside from how your posts read I am not convinced you need one, but then again I have a house full of things I don't need yet have all the same... when GAS strikes

I am still going to have a look at the Canon, well I love cameras and I have the time. Yes I suppose you are right, we only seem to get to hear about the bad stuff.
I think I am going to remain tight lipped from now on, I am going to keep further purchases etc to myself from now on :)

Has battery life improved when GPS is used?

My father in law had a Fuji F series and his max shots was significantly reduced when he had GPS on.
