Tried to login, then a message appeared, which said that they have noticed some unusual activity on my account, then asked me to click "next" to be sent a text message to my phone. However, when I did that, there was a new message telling me to put in my phone details. I am very reluctant to do this, because I am wondering if my emails have been hacked.

Does sound a bit concerning. These text messages are usually a 4 or 6 digit codes as a second layer of authentication. I can't think why Microsoft would need any phone details. Outlook did have a minor outage problem last week but other than that it has been fine. Probably a good idea to run security stuff.

They're going to find it rather tricky to send you an SMS (the worst sort of 2 factor authentication) without your number...

Get back in to your mail via SMS then set up Time-based One Time Password (TOTP) using Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, Authy or similar.

Just to let you know. When I went to login thios morning, it let me in OK, so I am keeping my fingers crossed it doesn't happen again.

I'd change the password if it was my account.
