Cant 2nd curtain sync my 500d

Hi guys, im having problems trying to 2nd curtain sync the flash on my 500d.Im able to do it for the internal flash but when I attach my flashgun (jessops 360afd) or my wireless trigger it tells me the feature isnt available.

Is it simply a case that the flashguns I have arent compatible and it wont work with off camera flash or am I doing something wrong?

As a way around it I thought I could use my flashguns in slave mode and use the internal flash on the body at very low power to set them off but when I realease the shutter even in 2nd curtain mode (for internal flash) there is a small initial flash followed the full power flash at the end of the exposure :thinking:

that is second curtain sync - first small one is the preflash which is used for exposure measurement.
 
so am I right in thinking that it just wont work with my flashgun or wireless triggers then?

A lot of speedlights won't do rear curtain sync off camera, you might get it with a dedicated speedlight and a ttl cord but not sure on that one.

For most of the stuff that off camera flash is used for you probably don't need rear curtain sync though.

With Canon, the only way to get second curtain sync off-camera is either with a cord or a Pocket Wizard Mini/Flex.

Or you can hack it from an on-camera gun, and an optical slave feeding the signal to a radio transmitter.
 
You can do 2nd curtain, I've been doing ti with my new setup I'm playing with. I'm using a yn-465 but the second curtain option is there.

Go to menu,
First menu screen -> flash control
External flash function control
Shutter sync -> 2nd curtain

Now I'm sure i got it working over wireless but I can remember how now; unless I'm imagining it!
