Hi,

I wondered if anyone knows what would be the best option.

My partner will be 40 in May and I ordered him a Canon 5D mark II with lens kit for his birthday. I think it's the standard lens that comes with the 5D, 28 - 105mm. It hs not been delivered yet.

The thing is he is interested in landscapes and macro photography. Now I have looked at the various lens options and they are all very expensive. He is a beginner, not complete but he knows only as much as he has read and only owned a fujifilm digital camera before, never a SLR.

Now what I am asking is if any of you could kindly give me some as I know nothing about photography but would it be better to downgrade the camera and get a kit with more lenses. I was thinking the 7D. The reason for this is because our monthly budget would not stretch that far to buy lenses at the 5D price and I would like to get him a complete kit of stuff because I think he would get bored saving for his favorite lenses and the camera would become an expensive ornament!!

What does the 5D have that the 7D lacks. Could the 7D be a good camera for his purposes and produce the results he is looking for?

Any advice would be appreciated!!

Many thanks
Margaret

Hi Margaret - welcome to the forum!

Far too many options with both these for me to decide on one. (One has a crop sensor & the other is full frame for a start.) Do a search on Google for '5D versus 7D' - that should start you off. If you see the specifications listed side by side, it may help you decide.

If you drop a post in the 'Talk Equipment' section, I'm sure a much more knowledgable person will be along to help.

Sorry couldn't be of more help!
