Hi Guys

I heading off to Maldives in september and im looking at getting an underwater camera to take pictures on scuba dives. Im keen diver so i want something thats going to last many holidays.
Iv had a Canon IXIS For around the last 6 years and its been great. So now im looking the Canon XS220 to use with the WP-DC42 Waterproof Case. Together they total around 475 pounds on Amazon.

Has anyone got any suggestions on a better camera or case for around the same money or better yet cheaper? I like that the camera films in full HD and has a high optical zoom
Is amazon the cheapest place?

Thanks for any info :)

Alan

Well, the ability to shoot RAW underwater helps a great deal but that means getting an S95 which is a fair bit more expensive.

Otherwise I've always found Canon's to be brilliant underwater (they handle the lack of red very well) so if the XS220 fits the bill spec wise then I wouldn't hesitate to get it (just don't get a fuji).

If its the ixus 220 you're referring to, then its available for £385 with the housing at cameras underwater. However, unless you're going to invest in a strobe, then you really need a camera with RAW capability to balance out the inevitable blue cast. Another option is to put a red filter - preferably a magic filter - into the setup.

It depends upon how technically advanced you want to get underwater, but an older camera with a strobe such as the cheap, cheerful, but ultimately usable Epoque DS230 (£250) with an older camera will give you better colour balance than the ixus 220.

Have a look at wetpixel.com for further advice

Personally I wouldn't go anywhere near a red filter, all they do is block light going to the sensor making it ramp up the exposure, not a good thing on a compact.

WB can easily be corrected with JPGs but if you're bothered get a white slate and do custom white balance under water.

Extra strobes are great, but very expensive so the typical shot with a compact is done in macro mode, with forced flash, a few cm from the target (hope your buoyancy is good!) or you can get good results using the sun as a backdrop to create silhouettes.
