Canon to Sony - help!

Hi guys

I am a professional wedding and corporate photographer based in Essex shooting around 50-60 weddings a year.

I am currently shooting with canon 5dmkiii with 24-70mm f2.8, sigma 35mm art, canon 135mm f2, canon 70-200mm f2.8

I was wanting to upgrade my mkiii and was originally looking at the natural step up to the mkiv. I am now really considering going to the Sony mirrorless system!

The body I am looking at is the Sony a7riii. It was between this and the a9 and most are pushing me towards the a7riii - some of you may have thoughts about this?

I am looking at getting prime lens, such as the 35mm and the 85mm as I was considering changing to prime anyway on my canon system!

I would love any thoughts and opinions on this change. Especially anyone that has made the jump or has experience on the Sony body!

Canon 5d mark iv all day long in your shoes.

If you really want to try the Sony system I'd recommend borrowing or hiring a camera and lens and putting it through its paces for a week to see what you think.

Then buy the 5d iv.

What makes you say that? Things like the evf/eye auto focus etc seem very tempting to get me away!

I'll reply later when I'm not on the way out of the door, I have seen some amazing reviews of the a7riii and a9 especially, so I appreciate they are different cameras but I switched from canon to Sony a7ii and it made my teeth itch!

Getting away from that system was like lifting a weight off my shoulders.

I originally looked at the switch about 8 months ago to the a7rii and I agree it wasn’t for me!
 
Gary, I'm in Essex and have an A7Riii, your welcome to pop round some time and try it.
 
Mirrorless with live exposure preview are certainly far easier to use than dslr in manual mode.

You can see highlight blowout before the shot and adjust slightly. Lovely and confidence boosting

I love my Sony A6000 but I don't love the crap focusing speed of the lenses in AF-C mode. Any subject moving at a reasonable pace can be an issue whereas my previous Nikon D3 and AF-S lenses could do it all with ease.

The Sony 70-200 f/4 has a fast hybrid dual motor system but it's not SSM (Sony's ultrasonic) so it is overpriced at well over a grand. I think the Sony 85mm f/1.8 uses a dual linear motor but again it won't be as quick as ultrasonic. The only SSM (ultrasonic) e-mount lenses that I'm aware of are the Master ones which are (cha-ching):

  • FE 16-35mm f2.8 G Master Lens £2199.00
  • FE 24-70mm f2.8 G Master Lens £1869.00
  • FE 70-200mm f2.8 G Master Lens £2379.00
  • FE 85mm f1.4 G Master Lens £1499.00
  • FE 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 OSS G Master Lens £2495.00
  • FE 100mm f2.8 G Master Lens £1529.00

Personally, if it were me and it's for professional use then I would hire the Sony A7r iii and a regular lens plus a Master lens and test the hell out of them all first. You might get away with the regular lenses but when it's pro wedding work I would rather not take the chance and be prepared to invest in the Master lenses.
