Thinking of acquiring a Zoom lens for my canon 550D the 18-135 interests me.... Was thinking if it's a good idea or should I go for 18-200mm? I dislike changing lens all the time so I'll be replacing my standard kit lens that is the 18-55 so 18 onwards zoom lens interests me....

I'm thinking along the similar lines for general use. Any advice from people who have either lenses mentioned would be appreciated from me to

The 18-135 is a reasonable lens and worth a look at - my advice would be to go to the shop with your camera and see if you can try one of the display models, take some shots and see if you are happy with the results.

I used to have the Canon 28-135IS lens and was very pleased with it, for me, a great walk about lens / focal range, but people differ, what 1 likes another dislikes.

I don't like the 18-200 type of lens, I can see the benefit for if you are going away on holiday, but I think the compromise on image quality etc is too much...

Another lens to look at, to match in with your 18-55 is the Canon 55-250IS, a very good price and very nice lens for the price, my daughter has one and loves it, she gets very good results with it, but this isn't going to help / solve the need to swap lenses...

and what is it about Canon telephoto lenses that makes them NSFW ? :)

It's no hardship changing lenses, my first canon was the 550 and I got the tamron 70-300 which went well together ! But I guess it may be too long at the short end ?

its a prefix for 'not safe for work' ie threads discussing or showing naughty bits

Thanks for the reply, Yes I might check out the 18-135mm first before making any decisions and I certainly don't want to compromise on image quality... As for 55-250mm might be a good idea but still the whole swapping lens becomes irritating when you want close shots quickly outside. Thanks

The whole point of the DSLR (or CSC for that matter) is swapping lenses though - if you don't want to have that 'hassle'/benefit you might be better off swapping the DSLR for a high quality bridge camera like the fuji HS20 or similar

Don't get me wrong I know that's the purpose I have two separate lens already but in this case Just require a bit more convenience since I'll be taking photos on the go This Lens needs to accommodate without me missing a shot or having friends wait and get bored while I swap Lens. If I was doing shoots that you can take your time on portraits or in studios etc... Then I'm more than happy for Lens Change :D

I see where you are coming from as I only ever go out with one lens (usually a 50 but looking for a 35 as 50 a bit long)
An 18 - 200 is going to be compromised unless it was to cost £1000s (i.e. no constant 2.8, distortion etc,.) but it depends whether those compromises matter to you.
Only you know after trying one as some people see the worth of buying a £1000 lens while others (me!) don't as for my purposes the cheaper lenses are good enough.

If I wanted the sort of zoom range you are looking at with a 18-whatever lens, I'd stick with my compact.

The problem with a lens that covers that sort of zoom range is that it is a compromise, not being particularly good at any focal length. And if IQ is compromised, I would be asking myself 'what's the point of lugging a great big SLR around?'

Yes I've been getting a lot of the same kind of response of quality compromise.... Now I'm thinking if I should stick with my initial choice of 18-135mm or just get a separate one from my 18-55 so 55 onwards such as the 55-200 or so even though it wont do the trick of not changing lens but I still hold quality higher than having a better zoom or flexibility

Or go for the 15-85 which will give you more width and reach and has decent IQ

I have one and am very impressed with the quality....

review here

The general purpose lens field is a crowded one, but the Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens stands out from that crowd by, as I said at the beginning of this review, offering top-tier image quality over an excellent general purpose focal length range in a nicely-sized/weighted/built body with great AF and an excellent implementation of Image Stabilization at a for-what-you-get great price. This is not a cheap lens, but I think it is a great value for what you get.

Thanks for the feedback and the review link that lens seems great but out of my budget at this time... I'll go for the 18-135mm but wondering if I should keep my 18-55 kit lens or just sell it off?...

Buy cheap, buy twice....

Save up and get the best you can.....

Not sure what you would get for the kit lens, but it will just sit in the box as the range is covered by your new lens...

Good luck, sure you will enjoy whatever you go for...

about 40-50 quid for the kit lens if its in good nick - however there arent that many people who want to buy one as most of us have the one that came with our cameras (largely sitting in a cupboard not being used ! )

I'd probably keep it, it is there if you sell your body on and as has been said they don't command a lot of money. If the £40-60 is a big help to you, then it may well be worth selling on ...

I'd say keep it, its not a bad lens and as said above you won't get much for it second hand. Just check the second hand online shops, full of 18-55mm lenses.

I also got the 55-250mm today and haven't had much of a go with it but it seems like a cracking lens.

Similar to yourself though I will be getting a walkaround lens at somepoint. But with lenses it all depends what you like to photograph.

This is the lens I would love to have! Too costly for me at the moment though but it is on my radar!
