I have a 5 year old Canon SX60 HS, and it has recently developed an issue (I think). When viewing the subject matter in the viewfinder, the image intermittently turns to an opaque'ish white colour. Sometimes using the zoom lever corrects the viewfinder issue, and at other times it creates the issue. It happens irrespective of mode - M, AV, Auto.

Any ideas what this could be before I call Canon Technical ?

Many thanks.

Howard.

Hi and welcome to TP

I know little about this camera other than what I can Google but to me (based on what you say) the common factor is likely to be the sensor.

Having said that strange behaviour can be caused by any number of faults and any repairs are likely to be uneconomical.

Two questions:-
Whatever you see in the viewfinder does it still take a picture....if so what does that picture look like on your computer?

Has it ever been splashed by seawater and if so how long ago?

Knowing the answer to the above might help in diagnosing, maybe, where the fault might lay????

Thanks for the reply Box Brownie.
1. The camera still takes the picture, and the pictures look OK on playback and on the laptop.
2. Do not recollect it being splashed with sea water, but I did use it on a boat (rig) in Salcombe exactly 12 months ago, so there is a possibilty that the odd droplet fell on the camera.

I'm leaning towards a viewfinder issue, but am no expert.

Hi

As it does take a picture, the sensor is likely working AOK.

So yes a viewfinder issue. If splashed with seawater and some did get inside, it can be corrosive to electronic wiring.....an intermittent fault can happen that is a precursor to failure.

I can only return to my point that whatever the cause, the repair cost might be more than the value of the camera.

None too sure if Canon themselves would repair it @ 5 years old consumer grade camera..... cannot hurt to ask them for an estimate of costs?

Thanks Boxy. Maybe time to upgrade. I’d like a Sony RX10 IV, but not sure the Mrs will be happy about the price. So I’ve been looking at Pana FZ1000 and FZ2000. Some reviews say the 1000 takes better pics than the 2000 despite the newer model having some upgrades. Any thoughts?
My photography is predominantly nature, wildlife, birds, landscapes.
