I was thinking of getting one of these and a used 420ex flashgun to use in conjunction with my 550ex. Seems like a good way of getting 2 flashes off camera without spending silly money on a set of strobes and a portable power supply.
Has anyone used one?

Do a search on the forum and it comes up with some interesting results.
Concensus seems to be it's not that great, was thinking about it myself but rather put off by others comments.

George.

I have a similar set-up, ST-E2 which is great, but two light set-up doesn't work as well as I'd expected it to. It seems to under expose and I've not yet found a way to manualy adjust 2 flash units. I can manual adjust 1, but not with the transmitter. The transmitter has worked with the flash held above and behind me, so line of sight doesn't seem quite so crucial, but it was in a small room. I have 580 and 430 flash units for reference so similar to your proposed set-up.

I have one.

It works fine for me getting one flash off camera (great in fact) but based on comments both here and over at potn I have been discouraged from buying a second (and I don't really need one...)

TBH for the same price as this unit I'm pretty sure you could buy a couple of vivitars and the relevant attachments.
