Canon Speedlites, EZ series?

How good are the EZ series of canon flashes, for example the 430EZ.

Im not really worried about using it on the camera with TTL settings just the ability to alter its power output from 1/1 down to something like 1/16 or 1/32

The 540EZ allows for this as it is the direct predecessor to the 550EX - in fact you can go right down to 1/128 and it does stroboscopic should you wish.

Looking at the details the 430EZ also offers some manual adjustment, just not as much/as high power.

The real disadvantage of the 430 as opposed to the 540 is that you cannot disable the automatic Save Energy which kicks in after 90 seconds.

This can get to be a real pain when you are trying to compose/adjust the lighting on a multi-flash shot.
