Can a canon speedlite 430ex be powered externally from the batteries in my camera's battery grip?

No! In fact I don't think that the 430ex can take external power at all. The 580EX or EXII allows the use of an external power supply. Canon do one that holds 6 AA batteries and you can get cheap copies of them off eBay. Other companies can offer rechargeable power packs as well. (eg Quantum).

No external power for a 430

No flash can be powered by the grip.

Canon 580 can use the CP-E4 as can some of the Younguo ones, An ebay clone of the CP-E4 will set you back less than £20

Simon, The CP-E4 that was mentioned above can be attached to the bottom plate of the camera so it is infact attached to the camera and does not have to be on a belt or strapped to your body in any way...

I have two for my canons and they are just screwed to the tripod mount under the body..This way prevents them from getting tangled with any other kit

Actually, in a manner of speaking he's correct. The CP-E2 only held 6 batteries and there are still copies of it floating about on Ebay as well as used originals.

Of course your right, and if I recall there are some 6 battery ebay clones too, I just thought about new stuff and never considered second hand or old models :)

One of the main reasons for mentioning it was exactly that. It's worth checking the small print on Ebay if you're buying a clone so that you don't end up with one of the 6 cell versions. Their recycle time is meant to be quite a bit slower.

Extra battery trays can also be purchased so you dont have to fiddle about unloading and loading the original tray when the batteries run out...I bought two extra's for the wedding side. I think I got them from Zebra...

I don't think this is correct. I have used both 6 cell, and 8 cell clones, and did not notice any difference. They both use a 300 volt output, so it makes sense.
