Hi All,

Been off the scene for a while and I'm just getting back into taking photo's again. I have just ditched my good old 350D and purchased a 5D.

What flash would you use with this camera? Would mainly be taking general photo's plus a few studio shoots.

Thanks In Advance.

Phil

I always try to work on the premise that I can grow into equipment and I'd rather do that than grow out of it :)

I have 2 EX580 Mk1's and they are great, much better to have too much power on the basis that you can turn them down than not have enough. Plus if you want to use them in the studio you will find that you have a whole range of studio style modifiers available for the 580 that I don't think are available for the smaller models. Have a look for HONL modifiers to clarify.

I dropped one on a pavement in Jersey and it simply bounced. :) So no worries with build quality.

Check out the specs on the Canon website and look for the guide numbers for power and make sure the smaller one is Ok with radio triggers in case you want to fire off camera especially for studio work. :) That should help guide you (ha deliberate pun!)

Thanks Ali B, Looks like its the 580 then.

:)

Yes. For all the reasons Ali says, plus it can act as a Master controller for multiple remote units, retaining full E-TTL control (brilliant system).

TBH if all you are going to do is direct on-camera flash then you might never need all the power or use the Master facility, but the moment you do... :)

Edit: no problem with Canon guns and radio triggers that I'm aware of, certainly not the Yongnuo RF-602 that I use (like most people do, and they are still mega cheap). FYI, some people use radio triggers for remote shooting as they are cheap, work with just about anything, and have good range even in bright sun. But they are manual exposure control only (unless you pay a fortune to retain E-TTL) and you only need them outside in bright light/long range.

got a 5D and studio work...the 5D would be good unless you're getting two 430's and a ST-wireless remote for the 5D.
