Canon RF lens for travel recommendations

Hi, just a quick one. I'm looking for lens recommendations for travel.

I have a Canon R6 mkii and a 50mm F1.2L but floating the idea of something more versatile.

I'll be going to Japan for a few weeks and just wanted to hear from people's experiences with different lenses for travel.

Will 50mm be alright? I get the impression I'd need something wider, maybe 28mm pancake lens?

I've also heard/read people comparing 24-240mm and the 24-105mm F4L for travel but there was a lot of conflicting information.

Open to any other suggestions too.
 
On my 7DII I take a 15-85mm as my walkabout lens. If I’m likely to need more reach then i take a 100-400mm L II as well. Covers a lot of ground.

So for an R6 I would take a 24-105mm for walkabout and a 100-500mm L for reach.
 
Since I’ve had the 24-70, it stays on the camera for 90% of the time when travelling.
My bag is packed for Cape Verde, it contains:
R6 w 24-70
RF100-400 (first use)
RF 16mm (but honestly - I’m as likely to use my phone if I need a UWA)
RF 85mm
Small bag, but not exactly lightweight.
I’ll likely only take the 100-400 out a couple of times.
 
We went last year just to Tokyo. The 24-105 was my walkabout lens. I dud take my 10-20 for some architectural shots and the light shows projected on to the government buildings. I had a small RF 35mm prime with me but that frizzed; I would probably take my Fuji X100V as back up next time for that focal length. Where are you going in Japan? If you are after wildlife, probably something longer.

Going a bit of everywhere, Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Nara etc.

How often did you use your wide angle?
 
Thanks for your comments, so now I'm contemplating leaving my 50mm at home and looking at getting 24-105 F4L and 100-400.

I used it on the buildings two or three times. Mostly my 24-105 was on the R5. As the 50mmf1.2 is large maybe the small RF35mm - or one of the other small lenses for when you want a lighter carry.
 
One more view?
A zoom lens will sure give you more flexibility.
Dare I say, a prime will give you amazing memories ;)
The 50 is a fantastic lens. If you could trust yourself to get by with it, you'll probably post here after the trip how you've a new all time favourite!
A wide 35 could do the same, 28 maybe for some.
Of course, YMMV... and if you don't have the stomach for a 1 prime setup, I'd say add the 28 pancake you've already comtemplated.

I'd echo this - perfect travel lens for full frame. I'm going away in a couple of months and am taking the 24-105L and the 50L.
 
It depends on your style, for me it would either be 15-35 or 24-70.
 
FOR ME, the extra flexibility that a zoom gives is worth more than the (pretty much invisible) extra image quality from a prime. BUT, if you think you might want/need the extra light gathering that a fast prime gives you, find a small space in the bag for the 50/1.2 as well! It's possibly a one-off trip so you don't want to miss any photo ops!

I'm actually selling my 24-70, despite always having one until now. I got the 24-105L specifically as a travel lens as it's smaller, lighter and has more reach than the 24-70. Since then I've really struggled to justify keeping the 24-70 just for the extra stop.

These things very personal, and so dependant on an individual’s style - as I’ve got older I’ve found I’ve actually liked going wider not longer, and whilst I also shoot mostly between f4 and f8, f2.8 is useful. Not so much for low light (for me), but for creative purposes when you do need that isolation or shallow depth of field.

Oh yeah I get that but, now I have the 50 1.2, I figure that's my go to when I specifically want the shallow DoF. Of course it does mean carrying both the 24-105 and 50 and swapping between which is more cumbersome. Like I said we'll see how I get on.
