As my trusty 70D is getting a little long in the tooth, I was thinking of upgrading. It will be used 95% for birding, with a Sigma 150-600 C, I am aware there is a focusing issue with the R7.
Which one do you think would suit my needs best? Staying old school with the 90D or embracing the future with the R7, I would miss the top screen though.

Hi, I upgraded to R7 from 7DII last year and love it. Took a little getting used to mirrorless at 60, but even for an old boy like me it wasn't too difficult. I have the Siggy 150-600 C and it works absolutely fine with R7. Have heard about focusing issue but hasn't affected me. Embrace the future!

Cheers Matt!
I turned 60 a few weeks ago, so this was going to be my "big" birthday present! Glad to hear your Siggy works with no problems. Is the lens adaptor included with the camera or do you need to purchase it separately?

Unless it is a special deal, the adapter is a separate purchase.

90D, nice camera but the R7 is better IMO. I use a Sigma 150-600C on my R7 and I haven't really noticed any AF issues. I use a 100-400L too and I think AF with that on the R7 is just a little snappier, if that's a word.

Biggest issue for me is the rolling shutter on the R7 on electronic shutter but if you stick to mechanical, it's not a problem and at 15fps, it's more than enough. The R7 can run out of buffer quickly if you machine gun with the R7 but generally, I stick to maybe 10 shot bursts, which is quicker than I can press and then take my finger off the shutter button.

I just don't machine gun, never have, so filling the buffer on the R7 isn't a problem.

I do stuggle with focusing on the 70D, as having only one small centre square to focus on a small stationary bird, hand held, is sometimes hit and miss.
Would the R7 give me a better focusing system?

AF on the R7 is excellent. It blew my mind. I wouldn't quite call it witchcraft but it is very clever.

First time I used the R6 I called it witchcraft

I have a 70D with my 100-400 mkii lens and i use the centre 9 focus points for both Aircraft and motorsport and although I'm sure the new mirrorless focus systems will be much better my hit rate is still acceptable to me. Having said that I am looking to get a EOS R6 mkii soon. I also use the back focus button so once i got used to that it helped a lot.

I have literally 3/4 weeks ago went from 70d to R7 coupled with 100-400 mk2 for birds etc.....................it has completely blown me away the shear speed and accuracy of the af and I am not sure I have even set it up to get the most out of it yet
