Canon R6 Question

Hi - I am not a photographer but my partner is. She has a Canon R10 and has been dreaming about a Canon R6 for years but lacks the money to buy one. So I decided to surprise her for her birthday this year and get her the R6 she has been dreaming about. My question is - will her lens she has been using on her R10 fit the R6 with no adapter ?(I understand there is an R adapter and not sure if she needs this). I think she has 3 lens in total - the one that came with the camera and two others. It would be great if she can actually use the camera on the day she gets it rather than have to go out and buy something.

thank you

Hi and welcome to TP

A very generous gesture:)

I am not 100% familiar with the Canon R series but having looked both models use a common lens mount, the Canon RF mount. So all should be well.....but I surmise that other TPers with greater familiarity will contribute with their experience for you.

HTH :)

Thanks - I asked her a little while ago and she seemed to think she could use her lens. I also asked a couple of guys in the photography club she goes to and they said they would work but probably not ideally suited to the R6.
I never spent this kind of money on a gift for anyone in my life - my limit for a present is about £100 - but I have spare money in the bank and I want her to have this camera. I would rather buy her this than take her away on holiday and I think she would also want the camera given the choice. She also thinks I am a cheap skate! So she will be in for a surprise. It's not that I'm a cheap skate - I just know when to spend money and when not.

Welcome to TP, I'm still using DSLR's so not totally up to date, but I think the R10 is a APS-C sensor, the R6 is full frame, I understand the RF-S lenses will fit full frame but will force a full frame camera into crop sensor mode, so to get the most from a R6 you'd need to upgrade any RF-S lenses she may have later on to RF mount.

What lens does she have on her R10?

I will find out this weekend when I see her and report back. She spent several hundred or more on a long lens from Wex 6 months ago. When she has talked about having an R6 she has said she could trade in all her gear at Wex - get an R6 etc. But with my gift - she can trade in her R10 and lenses and get what she needs for the R6.

As has been said, the lenses she has will work on an R6, but if they are RF-S lenses they will only work in crop mode, and because the r6 has a beautiful, but fairly modest 20mp sensor, a crop image out of that isn’t ideal.

But even if all her lenses are RF-S, you can get her a RF 50 1.8 (very affordable used from mpb) with it too, if you can afford it - so she get to see that full frame loveliness on her bday

Thanks for your replies so far. She really needs this camera - she goes to a camera club where all the retired men and women have absolute top notch gear bought with their pension pots etc and she is on universal credit.

I assume you will be buying a used R6? A new one may not be available.

Mark has covered the issue with using RF-S lens on the R6. Hopefully she has some non RF-S lenses.

No - new - there are ebay camera sellers with new stock. I am an ebay seller myself and know that buyers have 30 day return and full refund so should be fine.

The long lens will likely be fine, as far as I know there’s no RF-S long lens options, so it’ll be RF.

I’d guess the lens that came with the camera though is an RF-S lens, and that’s not fully compatible with the R6, as others have said, it’ll force the camera into crop mode so she won’t get the full resolution of the sensor.

But we don’t know what the 3rd lens will be, and that remains a question.

I’d like to say well done for such a thoughtful gift though, it will mean she’ll want a new standard zoom in the long run, but she’ll be able to use the camera from day 1.

OK but I suggest you check the warranty. If the camera was meant for a non UK market, Canon UK are unlikely to accept the warranty. Hopefully it will not need any repairs, but you never know.

I hope she enjoys the camera. I have one and think it is great.

Right - I asked one seller and all is new boxed and sealed - warranty is seller warranty 1 year. There is also a 30 return ebay guarantee. My thinking is with electronic gear if there is some issue - several weeks will be enough to reveal it and return for a refund.
I checked Wex - they have used R6s in excellent condition in box - there is one going for £1050 with 4000 shutter count. The ebay one (new) is £1500.

I think for the extra £500 it is worth going for a virgin camera. The seller is called Camix and he has 99.9% feedback - as an ebay seller myself (I have 99.7) that is very high indeed and indicates a reliable seller. He also responded to my enquiry about the warranty very quickly. I will also pay by credit card - so if there are any quibbles with warranty I have the CC to turn to.

The price seems very high to me. You could buy a R6 mark ii for the same or less from one of the grey retailers and get a reliable warranty. I am OK with buying used from Wex etc as you get a long guarantee and if you get a camera in excellent or very good condition you will be hard pushed to consider it not new.

I understand that buying used is not for everyone but I suggest you research prices.

Thanks for your comments. I can't find much of an alternative except some suppliers on google selling a bit cheaper and offering 7-10 days delivery AND not displaying a UK postal address. The ebay seller can deliver in a few days. OK maybe Wex is a good option and I am sure my partner would be delighted with a quality used R6. I wonder in fact why she does not trade in her R10 as she could then maybe have just £500 or so to trade up and she could then afford that. I am a bit nervous about going ahead with this as she may have reasons for not doing the upgrade at this point. I will try to find out her thinking before buying.

Panamoz £1370 for the R6ii new body only. More megapixels, better (IMO) camera than the R6.

From memory the only pain was the charger I had to go buy a shaver adaptor for mine. I cried buckets over the £2 for that against the massive savings.

3 year warranty - and as one who has used that in the past - a very slick process.

Genuinely if this is true, you should buy a grey import mk2.

I love my R6’s but they’re getting old now and there’s no reason to buy one over the mk2.

Thanks - looks like a good deal. The only issue is getting it in time as the birthday is 16 Mar. They quote 7-10 business days.

what is an R adapter?

I think I am going to order the mk11 from Panamoz today and hope for delivery next week. I will buy a low cost back up gift (which is what she usually gets) just in case and present the camera after her birthday if necessary. Thanks for all your good advice - that's why I came here. Hifi is my thing and I know what I am buying but am clueless with photography.

Yikes - I just paid. They said it wont be processed until Monday but I paid anyway - if I keep thinking about this and leave it until Monday I will end up just giving her bath oils and feel bad about it.

If it comes late but I get it by a week Tuesday - as the photo club meets Tuesday evening - I will present it to her in front of the club members.

The R6 Mk2 I ordered from Panomez arrived today. I opened it up just to see that everything is there - can you guys look and see - the charger, cable and battery plus camera and strap and manual. is that everything?

The birthday is on Monday though I am tempted to give it to her on Sunday which is mothers day - it would be a really great day for her if she can go out on Sunday and use this.
Thanks for all your advice otherwise I would have bought one on ebay for more money.

Well camera body only but she has an R10 with 3 lenses which she can trade in at Wex and buy what she needs for this R6

she gave me her R10 box to look after when she moved - luckily I still have it so her R10 is going to be worth more boxed

She sent me that message a few months ago - this is what she wants. She just then needs the F4 lens after what I bought her. Hopefully she can sell her R10 and lenses and have enough to buy it.

All there. Even a non-North American charger - happy days

Well - she got her R6 Mk2.
She was of course surprised and please though I must say apart from opening the box and looking inside - she has not yet attempted to explore further.
She said about her R10 - handy camera size for taking around. She is hoping the R6 will take better pictures.
I did tell her that the R6 is now hers and she can do what she wants with it - including sell if she is short of money or whatever.
I think I have done my bit and bought her a quality camera so the rest is up to her.

some of you asked about the lens she is using with her R10 - here are two of them

They'll be fine with the R6ii as well. Thought about taking up photography yourself, I hear your other half has an R10 not being used.

Serious photography takes far too much dedication for me. I have a compact sony with different modes and I found the idiot proof self focus mode etc and I use that when I want some fair shots.
I think she is going to hold on to her R10 anyway. She will use that R6 the first time she wants some impressive shots for the photo club competitions.

Doesn't have to be "serious", you just have to enjoy it - either at the time or the results or both. No different to any other hobby, apart from some of the parts are more expensive.

See also cycling, golf, running,...
