My new Canon R5 arrived late this afternoon and I've now charged the battery and I've checked the firmware and see that it needs updating. Ive formatted a Sandisk 64GB card and also a Sandisk 32GB card both extreme pro cards. I've downloaded the firmware onto my Mac and Ive tried both cards and it will not transfer to either card. I use an 2020 iMac.
Any ideas where I am going wrong?

Did you format your card using your R5? Maybe try drag and drop the firmware into your Mac HDD before transferring into your SD card.
Thankyou for your response. Both cards were formatted in the camera. I've tried dragging to HDD and also portable drive which it will do. It just won't drag to either cards.

When you do eventually get it working don't panic if it sits there for ages at 0%

The R5 I bought from a forum member arrived today and I upgraded the firmware from 1.20 to 1.52 but it must have sat there for about 2 minutes at 0% before doing anything, I very nearly switched it off to start it again.

It just won't transfer to my sd cards

Bin the one you have downloaded and try downloading another one, might be the file is slightly corrupted.

I have just downloaded the file and it transfers to a SD card no problem here.

Problem solved. I tried to update firmware onto my Fuji using a different formatted card and it wouldn’t let me. This led me to the card reader being faulty. Looked at the back of my Mac and saw there was an sd card reader so just used that to update firmware. Worked first time. Off to order a new card reader now. and Sd card.

Many thanks for all your help in trying to fix this problem.

You dont have the lock slide on the cards set do you. Can you transfer any other files to the cards or is it only the firmware update?

Get CF Express Type B for your R5.
Whilst I was looking at SD cards I thought I would look at CF Express cards but ran out of time. I’ll look at them later when I am home. Any recommendations?

Plenty of good ones such as ProGrade Cobalt, Angelbird, Delkin Black, SanDisk... depending on what you photographing and do you demand speed for 20fps burst or 4k 120p videos. If so the faster card you'll need to clear buffer. From what I gathered, the higher capacity the faster read/write speed it is, but come at a cost. However cost/gb is reduced in comparison to getting say 128gb card.
