Is it true that on the R5 mark I and R6 mark I, animal/people/vehicle/eye detect only works with AF method
AFLE (ie just one AF option) whereas on say the R7 it is less restrictive?

As far as I know, on the Canon R5 Mark I and R6 Mark I cameras, the advanced subject-detection features (such as animal, people, vehicle, and eye detection) are tied specifically to certain autofocus (AF) area modes, particularly the "Whole Area AF" or equivalent modes. This behaviour is restrictive compared to models like the Canon R7, where these detection features are available across a broader range of AF area modes, making the functionality more versatile. This limitation on earlier models like the R5 and R6 is due to their firmware and processing constraints that optimise subject detection for specific AF configurations. The R7, benefiting from a newer generation of processors and design enhancements, seems to allow for greater flexibility in utilising these detection features.

I had an R5 and the AF never once let me down - I let the camera down. I have had an R8 now, for nearly a year and the AF on that is slightly better. In the real world, I don't think it makes a difference for 99 percent of users. But it is phenomenal. Trying to use it on BIF, with eye AF is remarkable. The eye AF detected a mouse I was photographing, about 15 ft away, and locked onto the eyes. Never fails to leave me amazed.

Never found it to be a limitation. It gets the job done

This^

I’ve never had the ‘improved’ AF of the R7, R3 or R1, but I’ve never considered the AF on the R6 to be anything other than miraculous.

Agreed, I found the original R5 miraculous too. However, there were circumstances when I bumped into its limitations - e.g. snow, ice, or water spray in front of the subject. The further recent enhancements should help, I've yet to test in a very challenging scenario but hopefully soon, the snow has arrived :)

I use it on my R7 for sports - both motorsports and athletics. It's close to witchcraft.
Very much this, I've got quite a few images with my R7 that I really think my 5Dmk4 would have been hard pressed to replicate, especially the tracking once locked on ER7_2691-1500.jpg
I was shooting this at 15fps and had so many almost identical sharp frames it was ridiculous. The cars were flying into the frame from the right and the focus pick up was almost instataneous - don't know what Japanese witches are called but there are some in this camera :)
