I have a 2013 27" mac bought in 2014 which I upgraded to a 1TB hard drive and 16GB of RAM in the summer of 2018. I

began having an issue with my healing brush recently which I am advised needs to have something switched off and on again. - preferences, I think.

In trying to figure this out, I started doing a full back up of my back up disks with a view to updating Photoshop to version 23 and the mac to Monterey. I

read somewhere this morning that my Canon printer might not work with Monterey but looking into the drivers, I saw that in order for it to do that, I also needed to update the printer's software. I think I have also read that the printer software should not be updated via wi-fi which then made me wonder which variety of cable I should use as I have read that the 2013 version of a desktop mac uses a thunderbolt.

I can't check the back of my Mac until tomorrow. So, is there someone on here who could explain to me where i should start with this. Have a written anything here that is nonsense?

It really is important to me that I get this healing brush working as I am at a critical point of a project; will updating the photoshop help or cause something catastrophic to happen?

I have a 2019 iMac which has Montery on it and I have a Canon iP8750 attached, I dont know if my printer is old than yours, I used normal USB ports on the back of the Mac connected to the printer and updated the drivers that way.
Mine seem to work OK doing that have printed docs and images out over the last year or so.

I wonder if my Mac, even with its upgraded memory and hard drive capacity will ultimately be too old for Monterey....

If yours is a 2013 iMac, I'm afraid it is.

The most recent iMacs that will run Monterey are late 2015 models:

Edit:

The latest version of macOS that your iMac will run is macOS 10.15 Catalina

However, 10.15 is still sufficient to use the current version of Photoshop (v23)

BTW, yes, your iMac does have two Thunderbolt ports, but it also has four USB 3 ports, which will be fine for hooking up a printer with a wired connection.
