If have about £300 and want a wide-angle prime lens for my 350D, I have the choice (of Canon lenses) of the 20mm f2.8 USM or the 24mm f2.8. The latter has the advantage that some of my existing filters would fit.

Does anyone have any views on either lens, or should I consider a Sigma or other lens. I don't really want a zoom (they are making me lazy!) I want to try and improve my composition.

Any views ?

Doesn't matter what the camera is really ... it is what you want to photograph that really matters when deciding what lens to go for ... give us a clue what you are going to be using it for Mr P (apart form improving your composition) and we can then give you a more focussed response ... hopefully ... ;)

:p

20mm will give you an equivalent field of view to that of a 32mm lens on a full frame camera, for landscape I would say that's a minimum. On the other hand that lens in a close portrait situation would distort facial features noticably.

Being on a limited budget, I looked at quite a few last year and after various recommendations I bought a Tokina 17mm f3.5 AT-X AF Pro. All my latest shots are taken with it, I'm very happy with it. I haven't taken it off the body since i bought it. :D

Discontinued now so it's difficult to find, ended up importing from HK via ebay last month. £209 + delivery and import duty.

You could save up some more and go for the Daddy that is the 10-22! The Tamron/sigma equivalents for around £300-350 are very good too. Sigma 12-24 is awesome. Primes: The sigma 20mm 1.8 is a decent lens.

You won't get very lazy with Wide angle zooms because they don't exavtly 'zoom' that much.

Didn't bother saving!!

Bought a Sigma 10-20 yesterday! So far I'm impressed and having to recalibrate my brain for wide-angle (and then some!)

Also picked up a mint s/h Canon 85mm f1.8 at the same time!
