canon prime 2.8 300mm or sigma 2.8 120-300mm for sports?

Hi

I shoot a lot of rugby and already have a 400mm 5.6 canon lens but i want a lens with a larger aperture.

2 lenses on my budget would be second hand canon 2.8 300mm lens or sigma 2.8 120-300mm .Advice please.

thanks,

john

There are several versions of those lenses. Both Canon MKI and MkII are superb, but there have been three Sigma 120-300/2.8s and the first version from 2005 wasn't great. Things improved dramatically with the S version, and a bit more with the S MkII - but the price went up too. The Sigma S is also a hefty beast.

Both good lenses. I have a Sigma 120-300 and a mate shoots with a Cannon 300 f2.8. I would say his is faster than mine when trying to focus but where the Sigma excels is with the zoom. My mate has missed many shots i have had due to having a tc on his lens and the subject moves closer. I use a 1.4 tc on my lens and its superb and still have that important zoom. It is a heavy lens though.

I had a 120-300 sport and sold it to buy a 300mm 2.8 IS Mk1. I'm glad I did, it is an awesome lens. If I was shooting sport though, I would need another body for close in stuff.
