Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum. After hearing a lot about this place from Blackknight and JemimaLee I thought I'd join!

Right now onto the problem I have, I'm a budding film maker who wants to movie up into HD footage as it seems to be the thing to be using to get into the industry. I'm not the richest of people so I have found it very difficult to find a decent affordable HD camera.

I am currently loaning a Cannon Powershot SX1 IS from Blackknight and I think the video quality is just what I'm looking for with features that I like with a camera. Plus it's affordable with a just under £400 price tag, now what I want to make it complete is a good lens which I can use as a focus for the camera when shooting video. I will be mainly using the camera for video recording but I will take photos too.

Every bit of assistance with my problem would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance

Whats wrong with the existing lens for video? the video quality on the SX1is is pretty good as standard and if you stick another lens on the front the quality will suffer, also the SX1is doesn't have a very good filter thread for attaching extra lenses and you may damage it. Make sure you use a tripod when shooting video as there's nowt more annoying than footage that wobbles etc.
Welcome to the forum anyway, you should get some helpful info on here
Cheers

Totally agree with the above - typically any kind of additional lens you put in front of this is going to degrade image quality quite significantly.

Make sure you really test this camera out. My friend has an SX1 so I've had a chance to play with it a bit. I found that the video quality in moderate light was not particularly fantastic. Low light produced an awful lot of grain when viewed at full resolution. That said, when it's given plenty of light the quality is actually not bad at all.

My gut says if you're wanting to focus your interests on shooting video this probably isn't the best buy. In my mind, the SX1 is definitely orientated the other way - i.e. stills first, video later. But then again I don't have any suggestions for other low-budget HD cameras so take this with a large pinch of salt :)

Thank you for all your help so far guys, I do agree on video quality wise the quality is very good. I just wanted a lens so I could turn it to focus the picture rather than using the wheel on the camera. I am definatley going to be using a tripod with it because I hate shaky footage. I've been having a gander at HD camcorders and there's a few that look interesting. Will post links when at PC.

Again thanks 4 the help so far everyone !

Out of those 2 i'd go for the Panasonic, both good but Panny does get better reviews, make sure you get one with remote control too to stop any movement when starting shooting.
Personally I agree with the guy above if you are mainly doing video then get a video camera (most digital video cameras will shoot stills too) I had a SX1is and wasn't impressed with the still shots but video was pretty good (in good light) also if your doing any video editing make sure your PC is upto the job as video will slow it down and uses big chunks of memory (get a external HD for storing videos) and fast processor is a must.
Cheers

Yea I'm finding it out the hard way about the video being slow on my PC, luckily my girlfriend (JemimaLee) has a Macbook Pro which works flawlessly with the footage. I have 2 external HDs already so no worries there. I was leaning towards the Panasonic because of the lens having focus on it rather than a little wheel on the camera. Will have to start saving up slowly cos I can't afford to chuck £800 straight at a camera.

Thanks for all the help guys you've all been really helpful ^_^
