I'm looking to replace the Canon EOS 1d Mk.II which has sat for 9 months on a shelf doing nothing and not working with something a little more portable, usable and more modern.

I was thinking about a G12 until I saw the prices of new G9Xs, even before cashback so now I'm thinking about going down that route instead. Please give me a little feedback if anyone has one.

I would be looking to use it as a camera I always have with me, in the car, in the Lorry and when I am doing motorsport work. I would particularly like to use it on rallies to stick on a mini tripod near a corner doing its timelapse thing and then either put up the timelapse video or pick individual frames from the video for use as stills.

It's a great camera but seems unloved by the photo-geek community - very little info on the forums.
It has an excellent UI within the confines of a touch screen but it works perfectly for me.
It is small - it is actually pocketable, unlike most of the "pocket" cameras people write about - smaller than an RX100 mk 1(which I also own).
IQ as good as the RX100.
I love it and it's possibly all the camera you need - of course, I have loads of others too!!)-:
It's always in my bag.

Thanks Davek, good to know, it will be in addition to two 1d Mk.IVs so It should cover all bases.

I have to admit, it is a lovely looking camera, especially in tan and silver. f/2.0 at 28mm, but drops to a poor f/4.9 at 84mm. The price, and the spec at 84mm put me off the camera, maybe that also put others off.

It's true, but for me over 95% of my photos are at 28mm with these cameras so aperture is rarely an issue. Having said that, I used the 84mm end this afternoon indoors and it was a fine snapshot.

I'm looking to use it for the same sort of thing. Wide work on rallies and a bit of truck snapping where anything greater than 28mm would cut out half the subject.

If you shoot 95% at 28mm would you consider the coolpix A? You get fixed 28mm lens and a apsc sensor. It's pocketable and cheap as chips used nowadays. Better again the Ricoh GR, or even the x70.

I have been keeping an eye on the camera, probably in the hopes of a sensible price levelling off. At that price range, I would rather get something with a wider aperture at the zoom end.

I'd prefer the flexibility. Otherwise I'd get a cheap dslr and a 28mm prime that would fit the 1d too. As for price, Web are selling at £359 with £30 cashbook from them and £50 from Canon.

I've thought about the G9X as my little compact camera, the lack of 24mm puts me off though. It's a mighty impressive camera for it's size and price mind.

Fujifilm are selling recon x30's on their website for £219 might be worth a consider.

Worth a look but I'm a bit of a Canon groupie. Don't think I could bring myself to abandon the hallowed brand.

Interestingly I've owned (and sold) a CoopixA, a Ricoh GR and a X70!(-:
Of those 3 only the GR is really pocketable.
Preference for small cameras is my current line up of G9X (very pocketable) and X100T (throw in bag). These two just do so much more for me!(-: ( although I would like a touch screen on the X100T!)

I was just going by camera size website it's hard to judge how much the extra couple of millimetres will make until you have them in your hand. I've been considering the three myself. You've just made it easier for me thanks! :)
