Canon playback ring ?

What is it , What does it do , And how does it work ???

Any advice for a numpty would be good , Thanks in advance

I'm sure its something to do with moving the focus back to a predetermined focus point somewhere in the middle of the range between minimum focus distance and infinity. Never used it though (don't have a lens expensive enough) so I'm not sure how it works.

As Chris says you can register a focus distance and turning the ring switches to that point.
