Having carried out a good deal of research over the last few weeks, I finally decided to purchase a Canon Pixma Pro-100 dye based printer and reduce my reliance on the lab. The resulting enormous cardboard box found its way to Yellowbelly Towers, and with the much needed assistance of Mrs Y, the beast was eventually liberated from its seemingly endless bundles of packaging and carefully placed on the bench in my studio. I must say that at this point I was already impressed. It is a handsome bit of kit with excellent build quality and a professional looking exterior. Just don't expect to move this thing often, your back will not thank you for that!

In accordance with the brief printed set up manual, I connected it to the mains supply and switched it on. Various lights flashed and a prolonged clicking and whirring emanated from its interior until all fell silent after a couple of minutes. The installation of the print head and eight ink cartridges went without a problem.

Downstairs at my desk top, I installed the software from the CD ROM and selected the WiFi set up option with a degree of trepidation. Previous experience of adding devices to my LAN have caused the Yellowbelly blood pressure to rise severely so I was not looking forward to this step. However, my heart was forever thankful that the printer was detected and linked at the first attempt, although no message was displayed telling me so, and in my case because of the distance from my desk top to the printer, Mrs Y operated the printer whilst I piloted my PC, communicating via mobile phone. (Who says I do not embrace technology!).

The next step was to load a couple of sheets of plain paper for the print head alignment program. This was carried out quickly and easily with no drama whatsoever. The remaining software was installed and I was good to go.

I selected two images which I had had printed previously by my lab and printed each on an A4 sheet of Ilford Galerie Prestige Smooth Pearl 290gsm via LR4 and using Ilford's profile. The results were quite simply superb, with beautifully saturated colour and subtle gradients. A distant brick wall in one image was so detailed I could count the bricks. I was absolutely delighted. The results were equally good if not slightly better than those from my lab.

I cannot comment on monochrome prints because as yet I have had no need to produce one, and ink consumption is something to worry about in the future, but everything so far tells me that this printer and I are going to enjoy a long and harmonious relationship.
