I am looking in to getting a 70-200mm and i dont know which would be best heard great reviews from both so thought id ask for recomendations admitadtly i cant afford the canon 70-200mm 2.8 but i can the f4 and the sigma i can propably just strech to

Thanks Dan:thumbs:

What are you needing it for ?

Low light, indoor ?

If you need f2.8 then is the Canon really an option.

If f4 will do for most of the time then I'd go with the Canon.

Well im planning on going to long leat over the summer so thought it would make sence to get a good zoom lens but i will alo use it for other stuff as well like macro and so on

I'd go for the Sigma (in fact, I did). I had the 70-300 IS USM, and I was after something faster, for low light performance. Couldn't afford the Canon 70-200 f/2.8, so went for the sigma. When I've got the cash, I'll get the f/2.8 IS, but that's not going to be for a long, long time! (Still got to save for a 100-400 before even thinking about upgrading the 70-200!)

The Canon 70-200 F4 is a cracker of a lens and I'd def rec that one if you don't need F2.8

This

The Canon 70-200mm F4 is one of the sharpest zooms ever made

So if you just want some reach that would be the lens to go for.

Sigma, f2.8, 77mm filters, great optics around £425
Canon f4 72mm Hilters, fantastic optics, but i would still go for the Sigma, would you be looking to add an extender, i can say hand on heart the Sigma plus 1.4 Tele converter is a great match.

I have the Canon 70-200 f4, and as previously stated it is a great lens. One thing that I would consider is the weight of each lens. Personally I would not wish a lens that is much heavier that the Canon f4. The reason many people opt for the Canon f4 over the Canon f2.8, is the fact that it is much lighter, and much cheaper, with only one stop less. Not sure how the Sigma compares optically though.

By all accounts the Canon at f/4 is sharper than the Sigma stopped down to f/4. So if you have to have f/2.8 go for the Siggy. otherwise the Canon is a no brainer. It'll also hold it's value better.

I too would lean towards the Canon if the extra stop was not needed. It should hold its value if you want to move up to the 2.8 later.

However the Sigma is still a great lens.
