heres one to spice the night up!!! I currently own a canon 500d but would love to take the jump to full frame for the better quility. Now the dilema while i have the chance do a buy the nikon d700 or canon 5d mk11. I take landscapes and portraits, have only standard lens, 50mm 1.8 the 18 55 kit lens and an old 70- 300. :help:

Nikon...

D700's rule the world.

This could be a real can of worms! I say have a pop down the local shop and have a look at both of them in flesh and see how each one handles for you. If there are any particular features you like about Nikon or Canon then I suppose that could be real help in making your decision.

Go try both and then decide. Also look at availability, reviews and prices for the lenses you wish to buy for each brand (especially if you are going to 2nd hand ones).

Both are great cameras and you will not regret buying either.

:agree: Have a feel of them both esp the Nikon - prob a lot different to what your used to with a Canon ie controls, menu...

Then again TCR4x4 would know as he's gone from Nikon to Canon & now back to Nikon....

prices are about the same for the body but not sure on the lenses. I was looking at 5d with 24 - 105 but could not see a similar lens set to compare with on the nikon side.

I still have the 50D yes, but since getting the D700, Ive only picked up the 50D to take pictures of the D700 :D Sadly the one thing the D700 cant to is take pictures of itself.

It would be an interesting exercise to see how many people say in the last 12 months have taken the (troublesome and expensive) leap from Canon to Nikon and how many have gone the other way, that would say quite a lot I think

Nikon have just released a new one. 24-120mm f/4 VR. Supposed to be very good. Some people have sold their 24-70's for one.

Here is one..
I only lasted 4 weeks with canon.

Quite curious of that lens though and it's quality. But I've seen a few Nikon users going to Canon and back to Nikon. Nikon has better glass they say.

I've dived into Nikon and never regretted. I just love my D700 and wouldn't want to swap for anything. Don't know what the Canon's are like or quality wise.

21mp vs 12mp for landscapes and portraits is a one way comparison. Both are just as capable for noise, but nikon has proper weather sealing and AF. Nikon is probably a better events / general use camera, but for landscapes and portraits 5D mkII is the way to go. Canon has some nice affordable lenses that nikon doesn't offer - that may be another deciding factor.

I sat through a presentation at my local club a couple of weeks ago by a nationally and even internationally renowned photographer. She has scored top marks in some of the best competitions in the world and her book or books sell well too I believe.

By far the best set of images I have seen o date at one of our presentations and as always happens just like on here almost daily someone at the club asked her, Canon or Nikon....

Her answer

PENTAX :bonk:

So you see whilst all us blokes are out there willy waving about our gear, she is out there capturing great images without feeling the need to listen to all the marketing garbage :runaway:

Oh joy, a Canon v Nikon thread. And on a Friday night too.

What more could you possibly want?

A little bit more seriously... The make of camera body doesn't matter at all. I Use Canon pro gear, I suspect that overall the Nikon kit is a bit more resilient in extreme conditions. But having said that I still prefer the Canon gear for ergonomic reasons or just maybe that I'm more used to it.

The bottom line is that it doesn't matter at all, its the pic that counts!

Canon is better of course

cheers

Tbh both are great cameras, but I agree with daugirdas... get the canon if you're after fine detail landscape/portrait and the Nikon for everything else. Personally I went with Nikon as I prefer the form factor and can wait a year or two for an FX 25mp whilst I save for and buy top-grade glass.

And don't forget that the Nikon still takes great landscapes and the Canon is still a great general use camera lol :bonk:

Good luck ;)

I am in this position - I keep flip flopping between the two - it seems to me:

Canon has more affordable high quality lenses and better video modes

Nikon has better AF and high ISO performance, 'better' ergonomics (for me)

Nikon......... or Canon............ or Pentax.............. or Sony............... nah Nikon

Originally I went with Canon due to lens system seeming more balanced and affordable and also because I knew a lot of people with Canon. My thinking being that they would be a source of help for me. As time progressed (I only got a DSLR a year ago) I got myself a 1D mkIII and was very happy indeed. Unfortunately due to economic reasons I've downgraded, I have gone a step too far though and I'm not happy with the bodies I have now. Currently I'm looking at a 7D, I've considered a 5D but the AF won't suit my needs. So I've also been looking over the fence of late at the D700, the only thing stopping me is the hassle of selling everything!

I still have the 50D yes, but since getting the D700, Ive only picked up the 50D to take pictures of the D700 :D Sadly the one thing the D700 cant to is take pictures of itself.

Like it.... I have yet to see an opposite statement with a Canon user

While both systems have merits, it still appears the number of Canon-users going over to Nikon (usually opting for a D700 by the look of things) far exeeds the number of Nikon users going over to Canon...

You say that like you might expect the 50D to compare to the D700 in the first place!

To save some confusion - He had a Nikon D700 before then sold it due to his own reasons then got the Canon & now has resorted back to the Nikon D700....

Here the thread... Toms thread

What Steve said ^^

I wasnt disapointed in any of my Nikon bodies. (D50,D200,D700,D90) But for various reasons I sold the lot and went cameraless for a while. After sorting things out I decided to get back into photography, and thought as I was starting from scratch Id see how I faired with a Canon system. I knew the 50D wasnt going to be on par with the D700, infact when I first get back into this I bought a 450D and said to myself I'd spend the big money on decent glass before upgrading the body. But then I found the 450D too small so went to the 50D before deciding Canon wasnt for me.

Now I only have a D700 and a 24-70 and Im happy as a pig in a muddy hole.

For portraits and landscapes, it has to be the 5D mark II, it is unbeatable for that.
Excellent high ISO and better IQ for sure. :tu
Lots of people on the US forums have made the switch to Canon because of this camera.

Americans???
Pfft...what do they know?

Empiric evidence please that Canons are in fact unbeatable for portraits and/or landscapes, and that this particular Canon provides better IQ...than... what?
D700, D3s, D3X?

Doubtful TBH...

Otherwise this is just more interweb BS masquerading as fact.

Even Ken Rockwell (sorry, sorry, I know it's a sin to mention his name), agrees that the 5DMKII provides stunning IQ, more comparable to the D3X (of course the D3X has better dynamic range and other aspects of IQ, but look at the price!).

I think the only camera the can compete with (or beat) the 5DMKII for image quality in it's price range is the A900.

Of course, it is widely agreed that the D700 has better AF and obviously shoots faster, as well as possibly being better at high ISO's (honestly, I think the two are pretty much even though at high ISO's. I've looked at multiple comparisons, and in some the D700 looks marginally better, and in some others the 5DMKII looks marginally better, so I really don't know if there is a model which is definitively (Of course, the D700 will looks better at 100%, since you're looking at a larger area than on the 5DMkII, but when scaled for the detail to match in size, the two seem to provide remarkably similar results)) In any case, the 5DMkII is certainly no slouch in the ISO department, even if the D700 beats it marginally.

Any word from the OP on which you prefer the feel of? Unless resolution or AF performance are particularly important, I'd just pick the one you like the feel of most.

... I'd just pick the one you like the feel of most.

Aesthetics are very important too- you've got to look good:D

And, lets face it, the black body-white lens-black hood look, just doesn't:naughty::lol:

Are you kidding? Nothing sexier than a white lens. Everyone knows it's 'pro' straight away. :D
