OK,

I don't want to start a turf war, but I think it would be quite revealing, to see how many members who have changed their manufacturer of choice, and for those of us who have changed our loyalties from one brand to the other, to say why they have changed?

I readily admit that I was a Nikon fan until the DSLR came along, and what prompted me to change, when I had to make a decision, was the sheer quality of the lenses available, especially the 70 - 200 f2.8L.

However, I often wish I had stayed with Nikon, as the quality of their customer service, for me at least, was far superior.

My 2 penneth may be a little old now, but...

I upgraded from Pentax gear to Nikon (well prior to DSLR days) rather than Canon as when I handled the contemporaneous product, I just didn't 'like' the feel of Canon cameras at that time.

When the D100 came along I already had a few Nikon lenses, but I still tried Canon's fayre before sticking with Nikon for the same reason.

Now I have the D2Xs while several pals have the 5D, and I still don't like the feel of their Canon cameras! Wierd that.

I guess it's a bit like one's liking for the ladies... chubby girls have the same bits as slim ones, but some like the feel of one over the other! Good job for me my wife prefers short, fat & ugly!

My first DSLR was a Samsung (Pentax in disguise!) but after only owning it for 7 months I sold it and got a D50. The reason was that the second hand market for Nikon lenses is so much bigger then Pentax.

Hmmm, only owned Canon as DSLR kit (mainly because I'm still using my first DSLR), though I think my dads kit is really old Minolta stuff (i.e. the lenses he has won't fit anything remotely modern)

For the same reason my Sister is using Canon, though I did buy my ex a Nikon:suspect:

I was with Pentax (film) but when it came to getting a DSLR, it simply came down to the fact that the Canon 300D that I ended up getting was the most affordable DSLR at that point.

As it turned out, where I'd struggled with the Pentax (I didn't get on with the controls) - I got on very well with the Canon - everything seemed to make more sense.

Of course, now I'm tied to Canon not that I'm complaining :)

For film it was mainly Olympus stuff, still got a OM40 kicking about somehwere. When it came to going for an AF camera the Canon 1000FN was streets ahead of the competition at the time and it was the natural choice. When it came to going digital I already had the canon stuff and it was purely a financial decision to stay with Canon rather than Nikon.

Although if Olympus had had anything remotely competitive at the time there's a good chance that I'd have gone with them. Loved those zuiko primes :)

I chose Canon over Nikon partly on the advice of a local press photographer. This journalist/photographer from the local rag was taking pics of our son for a story and was using a Nikon. We assumed this was a good recommendation for N's but he said he only used Nikon because his paper made him (they had some deal going with nikon). If he could chose, he would have prefered Canon. I also prefered the feel of the small Canon to the Nikon....the way it felt in my hand was good. (I was looking at entry level cameras). Hubby also chose a Canon, so we can share lenses.

Been Canon ever since I could hold a camera, But now i'm adding a Hasselblad H1 and Phase one back to my kit in the next few months.

I shoot my manual focus stuff with my nikon fm3a and fm2 (belong to my dad but he's kindly become lazy and i get to keep 'em). For AF, I use Canon.

Have developd a problematic nerve in my right arm. Has been hurting for months now. Cannot hold a 1series body + L zooms for long periods.
Saving up so I can move to Leica; 1 body and a couple o' primes.
