No
The recharge performance level of my current LP-E6 batteries is now into the red, so time to replace them.

I prefer to buy original branded Canon items, but I'm slightly puzzled at the moment because most online suppliers have these batteries listed as LP-E6N rather than the original LP-E6.

Can anyone tell me if there is any significant difference, or does the 'N' merely signify later (i.e. current) manufacture? My camera is a 3-year old 5D MkIII.

I think the Ns were made for the 7D2 and produce a higher voltage / charge (I am not technically minded!). They are, however, interchangeable, although E6s will run out faster in a 7D2. I have both a 7D2 and a 5D3 so have both sorts of batteries and they work fine whichever camera I put them in, but, if you can find them, I suspect the non-N version would be cheaper.

As said, n is newer, slightly more power but you can use either in your 5d iii.

The N's appeared due to a change in battery regulations in Japan....nothing more sinister than that.

Think that was about the same time the smaller models changed from LP-E5 to LP-E8 for the same reason

Thanks for your replies everybody, that's very helpful. Having just checked my spare batteries (I use two at a time in the battery grip) my camera tells me that they're also in the red (that figures, they were all new at the same time and I rotate them regularly), so it's off to the usual suppliers to find the best deal.

Happy Christmas everyone!
