I bought a Canon 17-40mm last weekend and in hindsight I reckon I was a bit hasty, my 24-105 is probably wide enough for me, at least 90% of the time. I reckon I should have bought a long zoom, I quite fancy the canon 70-300mm DO , anyone here used one ? I like the "compactness" of it, or the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM , it's significantly cheaper, but is it any good ?

If you don't need the extra 100mm I'd suggest looking at the 70-200 series, the f4 versions are quite compact.

The 70-300 is a belter of a lens and worth a look at. I have heard mixed reports over the DO lens. If you're looking at that sort of money new, then there is also the new 70-300 L lens.

As above the 70-200 L series are very nice :D

If you are looking to spend £900+ on the 70-300 DO lens which has had some very mixed reviews then IMO you would be better off saving the extra few quid and getting the 70-300 IS L. You know what you're getting with the L range to start and if you look around you can get it at a great price. Here for example http://panamoz.com/index.php/lens/canon/canon-ef-70-300mm-f-4-5-6l-is-usm-lens.html and I can recommend the supplier personally. I've bought a camera and a lens off the site with no problems.

totally agree. Although the 70-300mm DO is ideal as a travel lens for its compactness and weight, image quality, well you have to work at it abit to get the best from the lens and at almost double the 70-300mm f4-5.6 its not worth the extra £££

I've heard good things about the 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS L and the fact its equipped with the latest IS system, might be worth a look it your budget can stretch, otherwise as suggested, either the 70-200mm f4 (non IS or IS) or 70-300mm IS f4-5.6

If you are spending 70-300L or 70-300 DO Money wouldn't it make sense to go 100-400L, it is in the same price bracket, longer reach and it supports the 1.4X extender (the 70-300 don't).

That is the conclusion I have come to, but then again I have a 1.4XII and want to optimise all my purchases. 100 - 400L for me it is, just got to search behind the sofa for the spare £ :).

Not on the 7D it doesn't.

The 100-400 "supports" the 1.4x extender in the sense that it is physically compatible. But it is manual focus only unless you have a 1D-series camera (or unless you want to try these dodges to get round the f/5.6 limitation).

But the 70-300 L is not physically compatible with a Canon extender.

Better explained Stewart! :)

Support to me means fully functioning, rather than just fitting.

I won't disagree with you.

But in this context, even just fitting may be noteworthy, because the 70-300 L is the *only* L-series telephoto which is not physically compatible with extenders.

Are there any non-Canon extenders it is compatible with?

I've got a Kenko Pro300 DGX 1.4x and I had that on a 7D and a 5D2 with the Canon 100-400 L and it retains AF no problem. It even reports the f stop and focal length correctly as well. The AF works very well in good light and only starts to struggle at dusk light levels. If you look on the Kenko website there's a list of all compatible lenses so you will be able to find out if the 70-300 is on there.

Similar list can be found on the Sigma web site too
