Yes
I'm thinking of buying a 24-70 f/2.8 to replace my 24-105 f/4 IS as this came as the kit lens for my 5D.

I prefer to have a faster glass and wondered if there is much difference between the 28-70 f/2.8 compard to the 24-70? Anyone using or used a 28-70 with a 5D or upgraded from a 28 to 24 ? Reason why i'm looking at the 28 is becuase they are cheaper and i don't need to have weather sealing and loosing the 4mm doesn't matter too much.

Also i want to move to a f/2.8 as it allows the center AF point ont he 5D to be more sensitive when shooting pictures indoors. I find the 24-105 hunts a bit.

I have a friend who has the 28 and I have the 24. The optical quality of the 24 seems to be significantly better to me. They are both built like a tank though and are excellent lenses. I'm not sure how well supported the 28 is now, since it is an old lens. If it needs repairing, I don't know how readily available spares are.

I guess you refer to the Sigma 28-70 f/2.8 EX?

If so, reports suggest that although good value of rmoney, the IQ is commensurate to the price. 'Very soft wide open' would be th ebiggest warnign to you, though i appreciate if your main reson for purchase is a brighter viewfinder this is not an issue. WRT AF, there is no full time manual focus and the focussing ring therefore spins as AF is engaged and achieved. Being reverse engineered the AF system will not be as accurate as Canon's so the low light huting may be equal if not worse than the 24-105.........

The best price is just over £200, so at £1k cheaper than the Canon 24-70, if you're not bothered by the dramatic loss in quality you'll see compared to your 24-105, go for it. :shrug:

I'm assuming he is talking about the Canon 28-70 f/2.8L

The Sigma is not £1k cheaper than the Canon. The 24-70 has come down quite a lot recently. I paid £980 for mine but they are now less than £800 from people like AJ Purdy.

Do they even sell the 28-70 L anymore? Cant find one anywhere......

Thats a good reduction in price. Would the words 'significantly cheaper' illicit an equally terse response or could you live with it?

People don't sell the 28-70 new any more but they appear quite often on the used market.

Sorry, didn't mean to be terse, but I reckon the difference is more like £500 than £1000. I wouldn't consider a Sigma lens again, having had problems in the past. I had the Sigma 24-70 but it was painfully slow to focus and not that accurate. I read the question as is there much difference between the (old) 28-70 f/2.8L and the (current) 24-70 f/2.8L. I could have misread it but I try and buy used lenses whenever I can as the Canon stuff lasts well.

If the question is Canon vs. Sigma, then please ignore me completely.

I'm looking the canon 28-70 f/2.8 and canon 24-70 f/2.8. I know the sigma is much more cheaper and i had a play with one in jessops but i prefer the build and the focus was a lot quicker on the canon 24-70 f/2.8.

If i do get the canon 28 or 24 then i would be selling my 24-105 to fund the purchase and so would not be too out of pocket buying it outright.

I say i don't need to go as wide as 24 but it wouldn't hurt to have that ability if needed and i presume the 24-70 is equivalent to the EFS 17-55 f/2.8 IS which i had on my 30D?

I don't dislike Sigma as i have a sigma 70-200 f/2.8 Macro which i like a lot as i could justify spending more for the canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS, even though at the back of my mind i would of preferred to have brought the canon instead.

oh, and on the terse thing, I have to live up to my name...

;)

My fault - i assumed we were talking current lenses.

Pesonally i'd go for the 24-70 as that extra 4mm is huge at the wide end. Knowing nothing about the EF 28-70 i will, for once, keep quiet :D

I've got a 24-70 F2.8L and haven't a bad word to say about it (coupled with my 5D)

It can be had for less than I paid for it (just under £900)

Is it worth it? This you'll have to answer yourself, as I don't know what you want it for (pro wedding tog, or amateur) or your budget.

If you can afford it it's a fantastic lens, a fair few on these forums swear by it.

The other thing is if you do decide to go for it you can sell your 24-105 F4L IS to offset the cost.

Upside;
Sharp Lens
Wide Apature
Fast (even in low light it seems to have few problems)

Now the downside;
It's big and heavy (certainly not inconspicuous)
It doesn't have IS

I have had a Canon 28-70 F2.8 for over a year now. I have used it to shoot everything from sports to landscapes to potraits and studio work. I have also used it extensively on my 5D since I got it.

When I was checking out the purchase, I compared it to the 24, and from all the pictures I saw with other people I knew with a 24-70, there was not enough of a differance for me to justify the extra cost. Also you should note that the 28 is a bit lighter then the 24.

In terms of image quality, there are only two lenses that I own that I think out class it (35 F1.4, and 135 F2), but I must admit that I have not really used the 100 macro that much since owning it. It is every blemish on the face sharp at F2.8 in the cases where the whole face is in focus at F2.8.
