I've been looking for a walkabout lens for my 1D body for a while but can't make up my mind so im asking for advice.

It would need to be wide enough to take photos of groups of people or small buildings/scenic spots but also capable of taking half decent "portrait" shots.

I say half decent because i realise what im asking for could be too much for one lens.

Budget it around the £500 mark for now.

Any suggestions that I can look into?

serious answer.... try finding a second hand Canon 17-40mm rediculously good.

stupid answer...
i'm going to use the excuse to 1am to disguise this crazy thing to have a play and think with,...

if you don't mind a little post-production. have a look at things like the sigma 18-125mm or tamron 17-50mm f2.8 vc... they may well be crop sensor designed lenses but they use the EF mount not EF-s.

here is a pic of the tamron 10-24mm on my 1d just did a quick test shot a while back nothing special,
(yes all of my photos lean, thank you photoshop)

so either i have a near 13mm after cropping or just put a subtle vignette via photoshop on after hide the inside of the lens, only visible at the wide end...

Haven't tried with the crop standard zoom but presume a 17-50mm f2.8 would look like a 21-65mm f2.8 (well 21mm vignetted of course) for £350ish

(i have used Nikkor crop lenses via an adapter that work well but i'm guess autofocus and aperture control are a handy tool)

I shall now step away and hide.

Another vote for the Canon 24-105 and a good second hand one isn't that far out of your budget range.

Thanks for the advice! It's pushed me towards the 24-105 so i'll keep an eye on the for sale section on here!

Im not keen on the idea of other makes of lenses after a bad sigma I had! I love my L glass though!

I like the 28-135 IS , maybe a little narrow at the wide end on cameras with the 1.6 crop but it ought to be okay on a 1D

I've heard mixed reports about the 28-135 being quite soft, am i right in thinking there is two versions?

One point I should make, the people who get a bad copy of a lens are going to bitch and moan about it, but those who are perfectly happy have no reason to say anything. I'm very happy with my third party glass, though Canon's L range is something else.

For me, it's not worth taking a chance with it anymore. Tamron or Sigma.

I've used L series now and have a taste for it (albeit an expensive one!)

They reckon that for every 10 people who discuss a bad experience, only 2 will discuss a good experience.

I'm not sure - if so mine was probably a mk1 because it was a few years ago - unfortunately some light fingered scrote made off with it - so someone probably got a bargain from cash converters.

That's shocking, how did they manage that!

I've pretty much made my mind up, going for the 24-105L and i'll order it in june (Bonus payout that month :P) and look at a flashgun while im at it.

.

My walking arround camera was on the front seat of my car while i nipped in to pay for fuel - my own stoopid fault - fortunately all the rest of my expensive gear was locked in the boot.
