hi , Im new at this.
I have a canon eos600d and sigma 17-50mm lens.
Obviously the camera is not full frame and so the lens is actually nearer 26-80mm when this is factored in. ( 1.6 x approx)
If I bought a 6d this is full frame - will the sigma lens fit the 6d and as its a full frame camera will the sigma then be a true 17-50mm ? or near as .
Or is there more to it than that?

I need wide angles for interior shots and if the above is correct would rather buy a used 6d full frame camera body than spend the money on 10-20mm lens for the 600d

many thanks

it depends on the lens, sigma 17-50 is an EF-S lens? If so then it's only designed for the crop sensor so won't work on the full frame.

It may physically fit, but the lens is only designed for crop sensor cameras, so only projects a small image circle - it would not fill the frame of the 6d.

The nearest lens you’ll get to 17-50 for full frame bodies is something along the lines of 16-35. Canon make 2 as far as I know, the f2.8 and f4 IS.

There’s lots of 16/17 - 35/40 wide angle choices for Canon full frame. You’d almost certainly be able to buy one for the value of your Sigma if you’re careful. However if you want the uplift in quality to match the camera- that might be expensive.

The Canon 10-18 is quite a nice EF-S lens and not expensive second hand, it is one of the few I kept when I sold my Canon gear.

When I used to do interiors for an estate agent I used a Canon 7D+sigma 10-20 mm ( the old version ) without any problems, I subsequently moved to a Canon 5Dmk2 with a Canon 17-40L .
The main reason was that I wanted a 24mm TS-E lens and while it will fit a AP-C camera it works a lot better on FF.
A quick Google shows you can get a Sigma or Canon 10-20mm for sub £200 so unless you have a burning desire for FF one of those would be ideal

AFAIK Sigma don't make EF-S lenses so you won't have the possible mounting and into camera intrusion issues you could have with a Canon EF-S lens, so it should mount ok. I'd imagine it'll vignette badly.

There are some cheap FF wide angle options such as the Canon 20-35mm USM. I had this lens and I liked it. There is distortion but this can be corrected in your software. Another option is the Cosina/Vivitar/Badged As Eomething Else 19-35mm which I haven't owned but I've read that it has its fans.

Hi all many thanks for your help and answers.good to know.
will probably go for a 10-20mm odd lens for current camera given all the info

Search for the lens + sensor compatibility. Sigma should include that critical info in their page.

I have this lens. its for a crop sensor ('DC'=crop sensor, 'DG' = full frame).

They do make ef-s lenses. I have the

17-50mm f2.8 EX DC HSM Optical Stabilized lens.
