I am new to the camera so no doubt its just user error,But i just cant get good enough pictures in my house at night,Last night i took a picture of my xmas tree it came out nice and bright but it was to bright because you couldn't see that the lights were on.

I took pictures of my kiddy and the background didn't look right either it was to bright or to dark...I had the white balance set to auto.

I know im not going to get great pictures in low light but i should get pictures than im getting now:)

Ive been doing some tweaks and its getting much better,The settings i have is

P mode
In my colors: -1 for contrast and saturation
EV to -1/3
Flash set to auto

in the menu...
Safety FE on
Image Stability setting turned on
The iso dial set to auto
Flash Synchro off

The second picture has the same settings apart from the flash synchro i turned that on,And ive got to say they picture does catch the lights on the tree:) But it makes the tree a bit blurry,The flash synchro does make a difference,With it off you cant notice that the snowman is lit up but with it on you can tell.
