Firstly I'd like to apologise for possibly starting another thread about full frame... Unfortunately, bandwidth is at a premium and I don't have the time or the megs to search :( it's taken me 40 mins to log in and post today...

I've been out in the Canadian Rockies wi my 7D whilst horse trekking, and it has performed admirably, however I've got the itch to get a second body, full frame for the following reasons:

High ISO handling - the 7D is acceptable until c.3200 IMO, and I find myself doing more and more low light work as I experiment.

More Shallow DoF at comparitative focal lengths

Higher IQ

Better AF system (especially outer AF points)

Now, I've historically focused (pun not intended) my efforts around motor sports and cars, to this end, I'm intending the keep the 7D for the reach and frame rate it provides for the motorsports and high speed action shots. However, I've been pushing closer to portraiture and landscapes as well as static displays (cars) and feel that I could benefit from FF here.

I'm not a tech nut, I don't require a camera body that will be able to make my coffee for me, but I do require something that will meet my requirements and improve the chances of getting the shot I want first time, quickly.

For the simple AF system that has been referred to as worse than the 7D, the 6D is pretty much off the radar. I know that at the lower resolution, it will create less noise at higher iso, but I also don't feel I need wifi or GPS at this stage.

So, that pretty much puts me at the 5D 3... At £1900 from HDEW..

What other alternatives would you experienced guys suggest? What are the earlier 1D/5D like? Or have I already come to the natural conclusion?

Thank you for your patience and suggestions in advance

It's worth remembering that the 5dc and 2 share the same focusing system, which is worse than the 6d system. The 6d may lack multiple cross type points, but the centre point is excellent, better than any other Canon available. In terms of performance, the 7d AF is second only to the 5d3, and the 1d series.

Personally I made the switch from a 7d to a 6d, and the focusing is a lot less of an issue than expected. If anything, the simplicity makes it easier to just get it working as desired.

If you're keeping the 7D for motorsports and high speed action and the FF camera is for portraits, landscapes and static displays then the simpler focus systems of the 6D and 5D2 won't really matter unless you want to make extensive use of the outer focus points.

For what it's worth I own a 5D2 (and a 7D). I wouldn't trade it to buy a 6D as the upgrade wouldn't be worth the extra money for me. However if I had the extra cash I would trade it and move up to a 5D3.

It does look like the used 5D2's have all sold at wex.

I had a 1d2 and a 2n, great cameras both, the 5d3 blows them away. Its small and light and produces the most fantastic images. I used mine today with a 2x converter on a 70-200 f4 and it was unbelievably good. The images could have been a tad sharper and may have been if I hadn't been using f4 (8 in reality). Wonderful
Wonderful camera, go for the 5d3 and sell your 7.

I've worked out (via man maths) that i can afford the 5d3 without selling the 7D, so initially that is what i will do. It's great to hear that the 5d3 blows others away. I was looking at the 6D, but seriously, after looking at the af system, do not think i will get on with it. Also the idea of the same button layout as the 7D is an incredibly big selling point for me - believe it or not.
