Canon flash "strobes" with preview DOF

I've noted that on both the 20D and 40D if the on board flash is up
or an external speedlight is fitted then pushing the "preview DOF" button causes the flash to "light/strobe" for about 1 second.

Is there a use for this other than just annoying the person you are pointing the camera at?

I would of thought it was to illuminate the subject so you can see the dof preview externally lit ?

I've noticed mine doesnt do that though.
 
It's a feature for checking the shadows created by the flash.

hmmm .. actually I think it might only do it with an external flash fitted.
 
My D200 does it with the built in flash, not checked it with the external one.
 
yeah you should be able to enable/disable it in the menu system, at least you can on my d80. it is very good for annoying people though :)
 
My Speedlite 430EX has this 'Modelling Light' feature too. it is selectable in the menus.
