Canon flash, 550 or 420

For a 40D, which flash would be a better keeper flash for general work. A 550EX or a 420EX.
The 550 is a bigger, more powerful flash, but older. The 420EX is slightly less powerful but newer technology.
Which would you choose?
 
I have a 550EX, use it on my 5D and 1D IIn, it's a fantastic bit of kit.

It can control a brace of other Canon flashguns too, I'm not sure if the 420EX can do this, may be worth considering this option if you plan to introduce another flash to the mix at some point.
