Hi all,

I've heard good things about the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II and read that it's a realistic option for those unable/unwilling to spend the extra on a Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 IS.

So I thought I'd whittled down my choice of lens to pursue next.

But after a bit of research, I now see there is a (new?) VC version, Tamrons answer to IS

So,....my question to all you knowledgable people, is.... Has anyone any experience with Tamrons VC ?
Is it any good ?

For the 17-50mm in particular (maybe it's early days to tell) does the VC spoil a perfectly good lens (i.e. has the addition of VC to this model had a detrimental affect on other aspects of this lens?)

I was considering selling mine and getting a Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 IS.
Only because I've wanted the Canon for quite some time but I think would be pointless.
The IQ with the Canon would have to be far superior than the Tamron on a 7D that I intend on getting and I am just not convinced the price difference would be worth it.
It is a good lens and I don't think you will regret it.

i am considering getting the vc version as well so will be keeping a eye on this one
cant decide on a used canon 17-55mm f/2.8 or the tamron with vc or not
they do not seem to come up that often for sale used so looks like a new vc version for me
just where to buy it from now

The VC version only hit our shores last November so it will take some time for them to hit the 2nd hand market.
Also, there are a lot of the non VC versions out there as well.
You can pick up the VC version for £405.

Give them a call and ask when stock is due.

There's a substantial thread on this here:

Fairly helpful, I've just read through it all, and am about to take the plunge and buy.

Hope that helps

cheers,...I'll have a read of that thread, methinks.

Indeed, whilst I've been keeping my eye out for the lens, second hand, I wasn't aware of the VC version at all.....hence my original post.....the non-vc version seems to come up very rarely....and as I found, the fact that the vc version is relatively new, I myself came to the conclusion that it would be unlikely to filter through to the second-hand market (for a reasonable discount off new) anytime soon.

Check out this link I posted moments ago in another thread:

Interesting.....the reason for my original post was the fact I'd only just noticed a VC version....and I noticed that because of simplyelec prices (they seem to have both versions on the website)....appears a very good price

Spose I'll have to search the forum for feedback on this seller....but whilst we're on the subject, is this an OK place to purchase from?

By the way,......thanks all for your input

S'OK.....just opened up the full thread that the post was made in.....I see now that simplyelec may not be the best place to go to.

Have a read of the live thread from which my post above came from. I wouldn't go near simplyelec, and Clifton do the best price+warranty bargain.

EDIT: Ok you've done that  Clifton Cameras are a good retailer.

Thanks, Simon.....

took a read of the thread referred to in post #2 above and have noted your input into that thread

To add to this point....I had the same predicament with the ef-s 15-85mm.

I got the impression that, although not as fast, IQ is near to that of ef-s 17-55mm.

But again....the lens is so new, these are unlikely to come on the second-hand market just yet.
