Your not kidding Martin, f/9.0-11 !
I wouldn't want to try getting birds in flight

Er, I'm pretty sure the 100-400 IS won't AF with either teleconverter on any body other than a 1 series. And even then, it will only work with the 1.4x model. Happy to stand corrected though :)

The 1.4x should work on the 7D in Live View as well. Admittedly not the best method for BIF.

I can confirm that my 7D and the 1.4MkIII with the 100/400 = no AF. As far as image quality...... noise, useable at 3200 but not very clean better at 1600 and getting acceptable. While the reach is of great value if you need super clean images or you need to pan/track the subject you may struggle for IQ.

DucDuc, are you shooting in Live View? It's reported the 7D will AF with TC's and this lens, unless it's unique to the III series that it doesn't work.

I agree with manualfocus-g as I've used the 1.4MkII extender on the 100-400 which will give you a maximum aperture of f8 at the 400mm end.

This will autofocus (albeit you're down to one focus point) on the 1 series cameras only.

no I do not use live view. tc & AF works a treat w/70-200 mkII but no AF on 100-400

The MkIII extenders are designed to work best on the second generation of super-telephoto lenses. As such, you won't get much of a benefit using a MkIII extender over the MkII one, so you might as well save your money and get the older version.
