Canon EX430 II and batteries

I've just got a Canon EX430 II and tried it with newly charged NiMH rechargeable batteries (ReCyko 2050mAh and Energizer 2500mAh) but it won't turn on. If I use Duracell alkalines it does. Is this expected behaviour? I know NiMH rechargeables turn out a lower voltage than the alkalines but I've never had anything refuse to work with them.

I've got some NiMh batteries in my 430EXII. They're Duracell 2450mah ones and work perfectly.

I use a set of Camlink 2700mAh and Eneloop 2000mAh and both work fine in my 430 EXII

Sounds like your 430EX needs looking at. I have 3 different types on NiMH batteries (7dayshop 2800mAh, Panasonic Infinium 2100mAh and Fuji 2700mAh). All work fine on mine.

Thanks for the responses. I've tried it with a third set of NiMH rechargeables and it's working. Weird! Possibly it needed the (slightly) higher voltage of the alkalines to kick it into life?

I use energizer lithium they last for ages and lithium batteries are also lighter they may be slightly more expensive bit actually work out much cheaper than alkaline I tried my rechargeables a waste of time IMO give lithium a try recycle times are fast too

i have found the 430EX does behave strangely when it's getting very low on juice, but i've never had that problem.

the problem i've had when the rechargeables were dying was that the pilot light would come on, go off when i pressed the shutter but no actual flash would happen. i thought my flash was knackered but a new set of batteries and it was fine.

were they brand new batteries? maybe with the flash gun being a high drain device older batteries aren't up to the job?
