Take a lot of photographs with my 40d but find the majorities of images are slightly on the dark side particularly when compared to my sons Nikon D3001 camera. All the settings seem to be normal but images still dark. Any advice please?

post up some images with the exif data
and the lenses you are using

If you're finding them dark a) check the histogram b) just dial in some positive exposure compensation

I found the same thing with my 450D, so added one stop of exposure compensation.

I have done the same. Added exposure compensation. Moreover some screens might look bright if they are point and shoot's where the camera tries to slow down the shutter but the image sharpness might suffer in the process.

Try Photoshop Lightroom?

same with most of my canon images tbh
however, when I dial in some ExC then the sky is a little pale and not as rich, back on my monitor, the camera knew best all along for this weekend
