Hi Guys & Girls

I am thinking of getting a Canon EOS R6 (Full frame itch that needs scratching) but was wondering if anyone has experiencing of using it with the EF100-400 F4.5 / F5.6 IS II lens with the adaptor? Most of my photography is motorsport and air shows. what I'm asking is does the adaptor have any issues or are there any downsides to using it? Does anyone use this combo for this type of work, I accept that I will loose some "reach" of the crop sensor.

With the R6 & the 28-105 f4L lens I can afford to purchase a RF 100-500 to replace the 100-400. I currently use an EOS 70D that is showing its age.

I know the spec of the new R7 looks like it would suit me, but I am also doing some landscape photography and want to move to FF. Not looking to move systems either as i am happy and familiar with Canon.

Any assistance would help me before i spend my hard earned.

Thanks

Doug

I’ve used the EF 100-400 ii with my R5 and adaptor with no problem at all -shooting sports and wildlife - I would expect the R6 to be similar. I didn’t find any downsides to using the adapter. If you head to the R thread there may be samples with your potential combination.

I did end up buying the RF 100-500 - a slightly mad decision before a holiday when I was shooting birds. The extra reach plus slightly lighter, more compact design is a bonus, but it was the faff of taking the extender on and off when also using the adaptor on the 100-400 which finally turned me. The downside is that you cannot fully retract the 100-500 when it has an extender on - so it doesn’t fit in my smaller bag. Also with the extender on, it becomes 420mm on the wider end which can make it trickier to find your subject.

I briefly had a R5 and my 100-400mm II & 1.4x III worked a lot better than on the 7D MKII.

Buy the R6 and try it ... if you can "make do" then the difference in price between the 100-400mm and 100-500mm isnear as dammit a R7 ;)

If not then swap.

I was considering this as I've got a bit of a fragmented set up;

R5 and RF 24- 240 and RF600;

Plus EF 50 1.4, 200 2.8, 70-300 USM Nano and EF 24-105L

Thinking faintly of swopping out the 70-300 for the 100-400, but then part of me thinks I like having EF for my much older EF bodies..

Yes there is sense in keeping them if you have older bodies. I’ve now sold mine.

I have two adapters which makes lens changing easier. I don’t plan to change any of my other EF lenses as they work so well adapted.

That makes a lot of sense to me, keep the 100-400 & then buy a R7 as a second body, just have to save up and not tell the wife!

You’ll find that the adapted lenses will be better than on your 7d

and, if you can wait, go for the R7

Thank you all for your advice, I think I have made my mind up to go with the R6 & 24-105 f4L lens with the EF - R adaptor.

A friend of mine has the R5 and 100-400 L Mkii and it works as if it was a a EF DSLR, no issues at all.
he also really wants the RF 100-500L which is pretty expensive and I will hopefully buy his 100-400 Mkii, as the extra reach compared to my EF 70-300L IS USM ( which is a great travel lens and I will never sell it as it is very sharp ) will be great for wildlife and Airshows.
I also have the Sigma Bazooka 150-600 contemporary EF mount which is pretty heavy and big to carry around all day, so 100-400L Mkii is a good alternative

Think it's the right choice, I have the R7 on pre-order and am waiting to try my 100-400mm MKII (plus 1.4x) and Sigma 150-600mm Sport before deciding whether to sell them both for the 100-500mm and 1.4x.

On another note .... have you seen the prices of the RF teleconverters :oops: :$

The Canon RF extenders are a ridiculous price, id rather spend the money on a decent lens.
