Beginner Canon EOS M3 about to pull the plug any reason not to? m10 better value? Appreciate any comments

Hello,

I am very new to this world still so please forgive any ignorance.

After lots of research and going to look at cameras in store i love the size of this camera and the fact it has a 180 flip touch screen.

I am going to buy the one with a 15–45 mm kits lens.

I think i would also end up buying the ef-m 22mm pancake but am concerned as the camera does not have in built stabilisation and sometimes i get shaky hands. Is this a common thing that pancake lens would not come with image stabilisation?

It is going to cost me £369 brand new.

Anything better for the money or reasons i should run for the hills?

I can get the Canon M10 for £264 new with kit 15-45mm so not sure if m3 is worth the extra £105 or if i should put that money towards the 22mm lens.

It will be used for:

Travel
Landscapes
Night Photography
Portraits
Selfies :banana:

Very occasionally:

Pets

Any help would be appreciated.
 
Not sure I'm going to be much help here, as I'm still using the original M and there has been nothing on the newer versions that has made me think that it was worth updating. Suits me fine as it is, but maybe i'm not very demanding ;)
The one drawback of the M10 to me would be the lack of a hotshoe for an external flash, though I would like the flip out screen, so if updating the M3 would be my choice. I also find the M3 a little more comfortable in the hand, but thats obviously personal.
Image quality wise, there's probably not a great deal in it, so it's more down to the feature set and which would suit your needs better.

As for the 22mm, it's a wonderful lens. Funnily enough, I have never even thought about the lack of stabilisation until reading your post, so no, not a big issue.

I doubt this has helped much, but hopefully bumping it back up the forum will bring more responses.

Thank you your post was helpful! How do you find the autofocus speed on your first gen? I have read reviews which complain the m3 and m10 are painful.. I tried them in shop and they seemed quick to me but I am not an expert

The M3 is better for many reasons: 24mp vs 18mp for the M10, better grip, more control points, EVF-capable (and it's a very good EVF although expensive) etc. Plus it's a damn-sight better looking than the new M5 ;)
 
People have always criticised the M series for slow AF but I have an M3 and find that it's absolutely fine for general use. I also have a 1DIV but unless I am shooting wildlife I use the M3 for most things. I use all of my EF lenses using the Canon EF-EFm adapter.

I honestly have no complaints about the M3 and if something happened to mine I'd replace it in a heart beat.

I have a few M bodies (M/M2/M10) plus my eldest son has the M3/EVF combo which I use now and then. I finally got to handle the M5 and I am convinced!

I still have Canon DSLR kit but I woud say my use is 75% M, 15% DSLR and 10% 35mm/120 film.

My favourite lens is the 22mm Pancake which, quite frankly, is fast and on any M body AF is quick and accurate.

As a walkaround the 15-45 is very well made and whilst the 18-55 'kit' lens covers most of the 15-45 soread, the mider 15mm end of the 15-45 is noticeable and useful. I also use the 55-200 short telephoto and it just lacks ghat little extra reach that the ef-s 55-250 stm provides. I have resisted the very expensive 11-22 M lens in favour of the ef-s 11-18 stm.

In all lens combitations, I havd not had any AF speed issues.

All in all I enjoy yhe M range and noe naking the commitment to the M5 will see me 'wedded' to the M!

I would suggest the M3 rather than the M10. The misding hotshoe is a pain.

I bought an M-series, for my gf to take to Disneyland. She did not like it as there was no viewfinder.

So on days when I did not want to carry around the 5dmk3 I took hers with my L-Series 24-70. I actually really enjoyed shooting with it.
