Ok.......So I need a little help being a newbie to DSLR.
I'm buying on a budget so old tackle will defo be usefull if I can still use it.
Cases and tripods I can use but.......my old manual Metz 36 C-2 has been a star and I'd love to continue its use with my possible purchase of the Canon EOS 500D.
Anyone know if they're compatible ?????
 
As manualfocus said, I'm also sure the voltages can very.

Flashes don't need to be mega bucks if you are on a £££ limit.

I'm not 100% certain its ok but you would be much better of selling it and getting the Metz 36 AF4, dedicated flash works much better.
