hey folks my canon 400d has a fault when using auto mode and snapping pictures the vast majority are out of focus. It does not seem to make any diffrence in light levels or movment i can have good exposure and still subject and yet still out of focus. The same happens across all modes landscape portrait macro whatever.Any help would be appreciated

Are you using a single focus point, or auto focus point? Have you tried more than one lens? Has it just suddenly started doing it, and has there been a drop or knock beforehand? Is the camera definitely set to autofocus?

doing it on more than one focus point i think its only on the wide angle lens.It was bagged up for almost a year when i moved house kept dry and no knocks or bangs as far as im aware. Was thinking of getting a new lens wanted to check and see if anyone had a similar fault first. Took it into a camera shop to ask about servicing and the assistant tried to sell me a new camera at 700 pounds

You need to provide more information, a lens not focusing could be anything from it being broken to use error.

Is the lens focusing when you tell it to? It'll be audible if it is and there'll be some kind of visual clue too (either the distance window or the front element of the lens moving).
If not then is the switch on the lens set to AF rather than MF?
Will the camera let you pick an AF mode?
Does the aperture mechanism in the lens stop down when you press the depth of field preview button on the camera?
Have you tried cleaning the contacts on the rear of the lens?

the camera body and lens are both set on auto or a/f mode you can hear and see lens elements moving all mirrors and surfaces are clean just the end result is out of focus.the mirror and interior workings seem to be moving fine. I have bben into photography about six years and not had a fault like this before on my other camera a 35mm dynax d4 or previous e0s camera

So have you tried just using a single focus point? Have you tried focusing manually, and if so does it 'focus confirm' at the right point? i.e. focus point flashes red and beep is heard. Are you using the single focus mode, not AI Focus or continuous focus? You say you think it's just a wide angle lens that it's done it on, do you actually have another lens to try and confirm this for sure? I think it's pretty important to narrow it down to lens or body issues.

In fact, it might be quicker for you to describe what you've tried to rule problems out, rather than us having to tease info out.

...and post an example image?

Is it locking focus or just racking back and forth?
Is it a totally blurred image or are some parts in focus?

Ideally you need to set up a controlled test. You need good lighting (I don't mean lighting equipment, just make sure your test subject is in fairly bright light), a static subject with good contrast (I drew a big cross on an A4 sheet with a black marker when I thought my 40D was wrongly calibrated) and ideally to set the camera on a tripod or at least a solid surface so it won't be moving.
Then pick one shot autofocus mode, single point autofocus (use the centre point) and tell it to focus on the test subject.

ok the lens is on a/f mode the camera is auto mode. The lens is a wide angle lens my telephoto shots seem fine. One shot,ai focus,ai servo evaluative metering, partial metering,center-weighted metering and all a/f points have been tried and tested all lens elements are clean/dust free and moving. the camera mirror is moving you look through the viewer the picture is clear well defined and focused you take the picture its out of focus.I dont have any pictures out of focus to post up because if it aint a good picture i delete it.

thanks for help/input was just wondering if anyone else had a similair problem

Have you tried turning the IS off? Assuming it's a lens that has it.
