Hello everybody, new to the forum . I have a Canon EOS 4000D with EFS 18-55mm lens. I’ve had the camera about 5 years and there is an issue with taking photos now. So, when the lens is set to Auto focus it does not focus and will not let you take a photo. When the lens is set to Manual focus there is an error 01 communication between camera and lens is faulty clean the lens contacts. I have cleaned the contacts but still getting the fault.
Any advice appreciated.

First try resetting the camera to factory defaults.

Next try another lens (if you have a photo shop near you or a CEX try one of their lenses).

If it turns out to be the body you'll probably need to buy another one as a repair will not be cost effective.

Thanks GreenNinja67. I forgot to mention in my OP that I had done that already. I have now however got rid of the error message by slightly twisting the lens away from the lock position. But, the issue I have with the auto focus still persists
 
An 001 error is the ribbon that connects the motherboard in the camera to the focusing. It's broken. Every time you focus the ribbon expands and retracts causing wear in the internal wires which, as you can imagine, are very fine.

You can fix it yourself if you're handy and watch Youtube how to's but if not then Canon will fix it. Problem is it wouldn't be financially viable.
 
Have you tried cleaning the contacts on the camera and lens?

Apologies but I got this slightly wrong. It's been some time since my lens was fixed.

It's the ribbon inside the lens that expands/compresses when you zoom and focus. Not in the camera itself. Still an expensive repair though.Screenshot 2025-11-02 22.21.00.png
 
If harriers9 is right it would be cheaper just to replace the lens. You can get a used one from a place like mpb for less than £50.
 
Try with another lens, but it appears that lens is dead and not really economically viable to repair. But not lots of money to replace.
