A firend of mine had an EOS Elan 7e which she never used and loaned to a student for a photography course. Predictably, the camera was stolen.

The student has now offered to replace it with an EOS 3 so as I "know about cameras" she's asking me whether this is as good.

I've never used a 35mm camera so can't help.

I've no idea how old the 7e was - she bought it 2nd hand, but the EOS 3 is 5 years old but has only been lightly used.

Any comments?

Potentially slightly better.

Wikipedia says the Elan 7e (EOS30) and the EOS3 were around the same time. The 7e for the 'advanced amateur' and EOS3 for the 'prosumer' so likely more features although it has been around potentially slightly longer. I wouldn't be that bothered about the change as long as the exchange is for a body that was in similar nick and a similar lens to the one that was lost.

EOS 3 is much better - its a semi-pro body - one of the last EOS film bodies :)

Thanks for the help folks. She only loaned the body, I think the girl bought a nifty fifty for it, so there won't be a lens coming back.

Snatch it quick - the EOS 3 is a superb camera. Much better spec'd than tne Elan, with 45 AF points and still used as the benchmark by Canon for the fastest AF speed with their lenses.

The only slight irritation is it lacks dioptre adjustment in the viewfinder, so if you wear specs you'll have to wear them all the time. Apart fom that it lacks for nothing - built like a tank and more weather resistant than any other Canon body except a 1 Series.

I wonder if she wants to sell it to me. I've always fancied shooting 35mm.

;)

LOL. Go for it. If not Ffordes usually have few tidy bodies in stock.

Update: My friend took the EOS3 and, very kindly, has asked me whether I want it.

I think I'm about to start shooting 35mm for the first time.

Those are the sort of friends to have.

Before I had my 5d... I used a EOS3... Its very similar to the 5D in terms of everything.... except the fact it's not digital. I found I hardly read the manual of the 5d... as alot of it was so similar. My choice of the 5d when I went digital was based on the similarities and also the fact the 5d was full frame. Remeber that that you will need full frame lenses... or I should say focal lengths that suit the full frame.

The other thing which I loved about the EOS3 was the much talked about eye focusing... I wish they had it on the digital cameras but for some reason canon could not get it to function correctly with digital cameras... a bit of me thinks its a deliberate hold back so it can be the next big thing in the future... However I loved the feature... saved alot of messing about with focal point selection.

I sold mine on ebay... but was sad to sell... I took the decission though as due to the fact that everyone and everything is digital now... and I purely do photography as a hobby... and was sick of scanning everything and then appologising for the poor quality of scanned images I gave up on the EOS3
