hi..has anyone any views on the above..im thinking of taking out a third mortgage and want to make the right decision which one to get...im leaning on the 1dx.. my photography interests are general and I do lean on sport and wildlife ...fully intend to turn a serious hobby into a profession so shooting high for the best equipment.

would appreciate any serious views on the two please.

many thanks

mike

If you can afford it, get the 1DX. Alternatively you could get a used 1D4 and a nicely used 300 2.8 for the same price.

A long time Nikon user friend of mine had a play with my 1Dx two days ago... he is seriously considering ordering one. When I asked if he had considered the D4 his replay was... The D4 is not where near as good as your canon... not even close!
I known him for some 18 years, the thought of him moving to Canon never crossed my mind. It takes a mean camera to make a life long Nikon/Canon user change brands!

Now, I have been a 1 series user for a long time, I had them all from the 1nRS onwards... This 1Dx is to the 1DMKIV what day is to night... where once there was darkness now there is light! No contest!
Like Tobers says.. if you have the cash get the 1DX!

I'll echo Ivan's opinion Mike. My plan was to keep two 1D4's and add a 1Dx....after two weeks of using the 1Dx, I ordered a second and sold a 1D4.

That makes my wait for mine even worse. Roll on mid week and a FedEx van pulling up at my house. :D

I had that same 1DmkIV or 1Dx thought a bit but in the end I decided on the 1Dx. For one thing it's getting to the point with cameras like the 1Dx that when the next 1D comes out it's going to have to have something very special to make me upgrade given that the 1Dx seems to have just about everything I need and then some. Particularly the high ISO seems to be so good it's hard to see where Canon or Nikon will go from here.
In other words the 1Dx future-proofs me much more than a 1DmkIV would.

Secondly the used prices on mkIVs seem to be pretty high now that they have been discontinued by Canon. I think that if you buy one now you will have to shell out around £2800-3000 for a good one but once the 1Dx prices stabilise a bit I would guess mkIV prices will slowly go down to nearer the sub £2500 mark. In other words if you buy now you are paying a premium. I might be totally wrong on my guesses though. ;)

I spent quite a while making a similar decision, although mine was not between the 1 DX and 1D4, it was whether the 1 Dx would be an improvement over my 1 Ds3 and 7D combo.
As the majority of my photography is wildlife, I've been using the 7D a lot to take advantage of the crop factor, I find lugging around anything more than a 300 2.8 is a pain especially when travelling abroad, however the relatively poor ISO performance of the 7D has been a drawback.
I prefer the AF system in the 7D over the 1 D4 as well, the 1 D4 's system was I gather finalised before the 7d's and particularly the spot AF selection is available with all lenses on the 7D whereas it's only on the 1 D4 with super tellies.
So the big advantage for me is the ISO performance of the 1 Dx over both my other bodies, along with a higher frame rate than the 1 Ds3, although I'll still keep the 7D as a backup and for situations on good light where I need the extra reach and don't have to up the ISO.

However I'll probably still get the next 7D mk 2 or whatever it is called as a backup as I'd always prefer to have a second body with me when travelling.

Will know if it's the correct decision when my 1 Dx arrives, hopefully later in the week, although Andy's new arrival will no doubt grab the headlines...!!!

top feed back..thanks guys..very much appreciated..1dx and blatant lie to the girlfriend it is then!

cheers

1DX has disappointed a few of the wildlife photographers due to the reduced AF capabilities using 2x TCs on the large zooms.

I'll keep the 5d mk3 as a back up..do hate canon for forceing me to take out new loan!..but hey looks like its worth it.. one last question please..would you say san disc extreme pro sd cards are the best for this gear ?..or any other top recommendations please?

Cheers. Ive got a 600 f4, so will need to read the details before pressing the button on a 1Dx

When you dig about you will find a lot of people using Kenko TCs and people using different combinations of TCs and having varying degrees of success.

It's like the 'taping' the contacts thing to force the camera to focus I think. For some people it works for others it doesn't.

Don't worry too much about the f8 focus thing. Canon say (and it appears true) that the accuracy of focus has been improved but at the cost of f8. I've owned a 1DIV for 2 and a half years and have the 500 f4. I've never had to put a 2x converter on it. I wouldn't let the lack of f8 focus stop you from buyin the 1DX as it is superior to the 1DIV in every other way I believe.

With regards to storage the 1DX takes 2 CF cards. Sandisk Extreme Pros are very good but you'll need CFs and not SDs

It's not an issue that's stopped me. I should have my 1DX by the end of the week and I'll be getting a 600mm once I can find them in stock somewhere cheapish.

600mm MKI is discontinued and hard to find in the second hand market. New MKII set me back £11K and it looks like is going to stay at that price range for the foreseeable future. But boy... it is a seriously good lens! Light fast and so sharp you'll need to handle it with chainmail gloves

So the mk4 is rubbish now, i think you will find it's more to do with who's using it ;)

Yes it's the MKII I'm going for. I'm waiting for Kerso to get it in stock, he's showing out of stock at the moment on his site. £9500.

Do you use and TCs on yours? Quality still as good?

I use both 2x and 1.4x MKIII quality is good with both and AF with the 2X is (sometimes and with good light/contrast) possible via live view.
£9500 for the 600mm MKII is a superb price!!!

Couse not, its still a hell of a good camera and I love mine. The 1DX is just better but then you'd expect that. If it wasn't then Canon would be in big trouble!!

I love my 1DIV and won't be changing it until the 1DX is more affordable for me. I have friends who swapped their 1DIV for the 5DIII and are trying to persuade me to do the same but for me the 1DIV just works.

Not rubbish as such but, I've used them both and there is a very marked difference in performance, enough to make the MKIV look rubbish like. ;)

When I got my canon 10d ...yes the 10d.. it was a massive upgrade from my olympus digital camera.. I was absolloutly convinced it would last me forever and I would never need to buy another camera... I thought the same with the 1dmkII that made the 10d look like a toy...., then the mkIII then the MKIV and shall I tell you somehting? I am absoloutly convinced I will never need another camera now I have the 1dx

All where big upgradesd and all made what where seemingly the best cameras in the world look poor.

I did love my mkIV and I did think it was the best camera available... Now I use the 1dx for most stuff and only use the mkIV when 2 cameras req... soon I will start to hate the mkIV :) When I used to love it..

Sorry for all the love hate quotes.. not really that sad.. but you know what I mean :)
